PART 7 — THE TRIAL OF TRUTH

PART 7 — THE TRIAL OF TRUTH

Daniel didn't sleep.

He sat in his office before sunrise, staring at the company logo hanging on the wall.

For years, Carter Holdings had been his father's greatest pride.

Now it had become the perfect hiding place for the man who had destroyed nearly every part of his life.

Thomas stood beside him, placing a thick folder on the desk.

"I've checked every record from the past ten years."

Daniel looked up.

"And?"

"Richard never truly left."

Lauren frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Thomas opened the folder.

Although Richard had officially sold his shares years earlier, several shell companies had quietly purchased small percentages of Carter Holdings over time.

Individually, they meant nothing.

Together...

They represented enough influence to place loyal people throughout the company.

"He didn't need to own the business," Thomas said.

"He only needed enough people inside it."

Daniel slowly understood.

"The finance department..."

"The legal department..."

"The security team..."

Thomas nodded.

"He built an army while everyone believed he had disappeared."

Lauren felt a chill.

"This wasn't revenge."

"No," Thomas replied.

"This was a takeover."

...

Later that morning, Daniel called an emergency board meeting.

Every executive was present.

Some looked nervous.

Others looked annoyed.

Richard wasn't there.

"He no longer works here," one board member reminded them.

Thomas quietly slid copies of the financial records across the table.

Silence filled the room as each director read the documents.

One by one, faces changed.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

Fear.

Finally, one executive spoke.

"If this is true..."

Daniel interrupted.

"It is."

Another director shook his head.

"Richard couldn't have done this alone."

"No," Daniel answered.

"He didn't."

The room became uncomfortably quiet.

Someone inside that boardroom had been helping Richard.

But who?

...

Before the meeting could continue, the conference room doors opened.

A police detective entered.

"Mr. Carter?"

Daniel stood.

"Yes?"

"I'm Detective Harris."

"I have a warrant for your arrest."

Lauren's heart stopped.

"What?"

The detective unfolded several documents.

"You're being charged with corporate fraud, embezzlement, and destruction of financial records."

Daniel stared at him.

"Those records are forged."

"You can explain that downtown."

Two officers stepped forward.

Handcuffs clicked around Daniel's wrists.

Lauren instinctively moved toward him.

"He didn't do this."

Detective Harris looked sympathetic.

"Ma'am, we have evidence."

Thomas stepped between them.

"You have fabricated evidence."

The detective sighed.

"Then prove it."

As Daniel was led away, he looked at Lauren.

"Protect the twins."

She nodded.

"I will."

...

News spread within hours.

Television stations replayed footage of Daniel leaving headquarters in handcuffs.

Former employees gave interviews.

Social media exploded with speculation.

To the public, Daniel looked exactly like the man Richard wanted everyone to see.

A disgraced executive.

An unfaithful husband.

A criminal.

Lauren watched the broadcasts with growing anger.

"They're doing the same thing again."

Thomas nodded.

"They're controlling the story."

Lauren switched off the television.

"Then we change the ending."

...

That evening, Lauren visited Daniel at the detention center.

He looked exhausted.

But calmer than she expected.

"They're moving fast," he said.

"They're afraid."

Lauren leaned forward.

"We found something."

Thomas had discovered security logs showing someone accessed Daniel's executive account while he was overseas on business.

Every fraudulent transaction had been approved during those dates.

"It proves someone impersonated you," Lauren said.

Daniel managed a faint smile.

"For the first time..."

"...we have evidence."

"But it isn't enough."

"No."

He lowered his voice.

"We need someone from Richard's side."

Someone willing to testify.

Someone who knew everything.

Lauren immediately thought of one person.

Vanessa.

...

Finding Vanessa wasn't easy.

She had disappeared months earlier.

After dozens of phone calls and several dead ends, Thomas located her through an old rental agreement.

She was living alone in a small town nearly three hours away.

Lauren drove there the next morning.

Vanessa looked nothing like the confident woman she remembered.

She seemed thinner.

Older.

Tired.

When she opened the door and saw Lauren, she almost closed it again.

"I'm not here to fight," Lauren said.

Vanessa remained silent.

Finally she stepped aside.

Inside the small apartment, Lauren noticed unopened bills scattered across the table.

No expensive clothes.

No luxury lifestyle.

Whatever money Richard had promised...

It was gone.

Lauren placed the photograph of Richard on the table.

"He's framing Daniel."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I know."

Lauren's voice hardened.

"Then help us."

Tears filled Vanessa's eyes.

"I wanted to tell the truth."

"Why didn't you?"

Vanessa slowly rolled up her sleeve.

A fading bruise covered her arm.

"He said if I talked..."

"...I'd never see my younger brother again."

Lauren felt her anger shift into something else.

Richard hadn't only manipulated Daniel.

He had controlled Vanessa through fear.

"I have proof," Vanessa whispered.

Lauren looked up.

"What proof?"

"I recorded one conversation."

"You still have it?"

Vanessa nodded.

"I hid it somewhere Richard could never find."

Hope flickered for the first time in days.

"Take me there."

Before Vanessa could answer...

A loud crash shattered the front window.

Glass exploded across the room.

Both women dropped to the floor.

Outside, a black SUV accelerated away.

On the floor beside the broken window lay a single stone wrapped in paper.

Lauren unfolded the note with trembling hands.

May you like

It contained only one sentence.

The next witness won't survive.
