PART 6 — THE ENEMY IN THE SHADOWS

PART 6 — THE ENEMY IN THE SHADOWS
Lauren's hands trembled as she stared at the photograph on her phone.
The nursery window.
The twins.
Someone had been watching them.
Not yesterday.
Not last week.
Today.
Right now.
Daniel grabbed his keys without another word.
"We're leaving."
"What?"
"The apartment isn't safe anymore."
Lauren looked toward the nursery, where the twins were sleeping peacefully, unaware that someone had turned their lives into a game.
Within minutes, they were back in the car.
Daniel drove faster than Lauren had ever seen before.
Every red light felt like an eternity.
Every unfamiliar vehicle in the rearview mirror looked suspicious.
When they finally reached the apartment building, Daniel stopped Lauren before she stepped out.
"Stay here."
"I'm not leaving you to go in alone."
"You have the babies to think about."
"And so do you."
Their eyes met.
For the first time since their marriage had fallen apart, they weren't arguing against each other.
They were standing on the same side.
Daniel nodded once.
Together, they entered the building.
...
The apartment door was locked.
No signs of forced entry.
Daniel slowly pushed it open.
Silence.
Too much silence.
Lauren rushed toward the nursery.
The twins were asleep exactly as they had left them.
She let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding.
Daniel searched every room.
Closets.
Balcony.
Bathroom.
Nothing.
Then he noticed something on the dining table.
A white envelope.
Neither of them had left it there.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Lauren pushing the twins in a stroller the previous afternoon.
Taken from across the street.
On the back were six handwritten words.
I can reach them anytime.
Lauren felt her knees weaken.
Daniel crushed the photograph in his fist.
"This ends now."
...
That evening, Daniel contacted the only person he still trusted from his father's company.
Thomas Bennett.
A retired security director who had worked beside Daniel's father for nearly twenty years.
Thomas arrived just before sunset.
He was in his sixties, broad-shouldered despite his age, with the calm eyes of someone who had spent a lifetime solving problems before they became disasters.
After examining the apartment, he frowned.
"Professional."
"What do you mean?" Lauren asked.
"The person who entered knew exactly where your cameras were."
"Cameras?"
Thomas nodded.
"The security system was disabled for precisely eleven minutes."
Daniel stared at him.
"Our security company never reported that."
"They wouldn't have seen it."
Thomas opened a small device connected to the home's network.
"The interruption came from inside the system."
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Someone has access."
"Someone with authorization."
Lauren looked between them.
"You mean..."
Thomas finished the sentence.
"Someone inside Daniel's company."
...
The following morning, Thomas began reviewing old employee records.
Thousands of names.
Years of employment history.
Hours passed.
Then he stopped.
"Richard Sullivan."
Daniel looked over his shoulder.
Thomas's face hardened.
"I knew it."
"You know him?"
Thomas nodded slowly.
"He wasn't just your father's friend."
"He was his business partner."
Lauren frowned.
"You never told me that."
"Because your father bought Richard out of the company twelve years ago."
Daniel looked stunned.
"Why?"
Thomas hesitated.
"Your father believed Richard had been stealing from the business."
Silence.
"But there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute."
Daniel leaned against the desk.
"My father always said Richard wanted control."
Thomas nodded.
"He did."
"And when your father refused..."
"He waited."
Lauren suddenly understood.
"This has never been about me."
Thomas looked at her.
"No."
"It was about destroying Daniel."
"And you became the easiest way to do it."
...
Before anyone could speak again, Thomas's laptop chimed.
An email.
No sender.
No subject.
Only an attachment.
Daniel opened it.
Security footage.
Timestamped the day Lauren had been accused of lying.
The video showed Vanessa entering a private medical office.
Ten minutes later...
Richard Sullivan walked in.
He stayed inside for nearly an hour.
Lauren whispered,
"The forged report..."
Thomas nodded.
"They were working together."
Daniel clenched his jaw.
"But why would Vanessa help him?"
Another document appeared in the email.
Bank transfers.
Monthly payments.
Large ones.
Richard had been paying Vanessa for over two years.
Lauren closed her eyes.
"So none of it was real."
"The relationship."
"The pregnancy lie."
"The accusations."
Daniel's voice broke.
"I destroyed our family..."
"...for something someone bought."
No one answered.
Because there was nothing to say.
...
Late that night, Lauren couldn't sleep.
She checked on the twins twice before returning to the living room.
Daniel was sitting alone in the dark.
"You should get some rest," she said.
He shook his head.
"I keep thinking about what I almost lost."
Lauren remained silent.
He continued.
"I spent months believing strangers."
"I questioned the only person who never lied to me."
Lauren looked down.
"I don't know if I'll ever forgive you."
"I know."
"But I'll spend the rest of my life earning the chance."
Before Lauren could reply...
Thomas rushed into the room holding his phone.
"You need to see this."
He turned the screen toward them.
The home security system had detected movement.
Not inside.
Outside.
A single figure stood beneath a streetlight across from the apartment building.
Wearing a long black coat.
Watching the windows.
Watching them.
Thomas zoomed in.
Lauren felt the blood drain from her face.
Daniel whispered the name before anyone else could.
"Richard."
As if hearing his name, the man slowly looked up toward the camera.
Then...
He smiled.
Not the smile of someone hiding.
The smile of someone who wanted to be seen.
Seconds later, he stepped into a black sedan and disappeared into the night.
But before the car drove away...
The security camera captured one final detail.
The license plate.
Thomas immediately ran it through the database.
The registration appeared.
Owner:
Carter Holdings.
Daniel stared at the screen in disbelief.
Richard wasn't operating from the shadows anymore.
May you like
He was operating...
From inside Daniel's own company.
