PART 5 — LOCKER 317

PART 5 — LOCKER 317
Neither Lauren nor Daniel slept that night.
The envelope sat on the kitchen table between them like a loaded weapon.
Neither of them wanted to touch it again.
Yet neither could look away.
The silver key gleamed beneath the dining room light.
Locker 317.
Somewhere across the city.
Lauren rocked one of the twins gently while Daniel stared at the photographs spread across the table.
"I know I've seen him," Daniel whispered again.
"But where?"
Lauren studied the stranger's face.
Mid-forties.
Gray suit.
No expression.
The kind of face that disappeared in a crowd.
Yet somehow...
It felt familiar.
"Could he have worked for your company?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't think so."
"But he's been following us."
Neither of them noticed the baby monitor crackling with static.
A tiny sound.
Almost too quiet to hear.
Almost...
Like breathing.
...
The next morning they drove separately.
Daniel insisted.
"If this is connected to whoever destroyed us before, I don't want both babies in one car."
Lauren didn't argue.
For the first time, they weren't acting like former spouses.
They were acting like parents.
The storage facility stood on the edge of the industrial district.
Old.
Almost abandoned.
Only one employee sat behind the reception desk.
When Daniel showed the key, the elderly manager frowned.
"I wondered when someone would come."
Lauren's heart skipped.
"You knew about this locker?"
The man nodded.
"The rent has been paid every month for nearly three years."
"By who?"
"I've never met him."
"He always paid online."
Three years.
Lauren exchanged a glance with Daniel.
That was before the accusations.
Before Vanessa.
Before everything collapsed.
Someone had planned this for years.
...
Locker 317 waited at the end of a narrow hallway.
Daniel slid the key into the lock.
His hands trembled.
The metal clicked.
The door rolled upward.
Inside...
There was only one cardboard box.
Nothing else.
Lauren slowly lifted the lid.
At first glance, it looked ordinary.
Old folders.
Flash drives.
Photographs.
A digital voice recorder.
Then Daniel picked up the folder lying on top.
His face turned white.
Employment Records.
His company logo covered the front.
Inside were copies of internal documents.
Documents that should never have left the executive office.
Every page carried forged signatures.
Including his own.
Lauren looked closer.
"This isn't your handwriting."
"No."
"It isn't."
"But whoever made these...
knew exactly how I sign."
Another folder contained bank transfers.
Millions of dollars.
Fake accounts.
False approvals.
All bearing Daniel's name.
Someone hadn't only framed him as an unfaithful husband.
Someone had been preparing to destroy his career too.
Then Lauren found a sealed envelope.
On the front, written carefully in blue ink:
If you're reading this, I may already be dead.
She looked at Daniel.
He slowly nodded.
She opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My name is Michael Reeves.
If these documents reach you, it means I failed.
I worked as Head of Compliance at Carter Holdings.
I discovered financial fraud involving someone very close to your executive team.
Before I could report it, evidence began disappearing.
Witnesses resigned.
Computers were wiped.
Then I learned they planned to blame Daniel Carter.
The affair.
The forged medical records.
Vanessa.
Those were only distractions.
The real objective was the company.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Lauren continued reading.
If Daniel lost everything personally, no one would question his professional collapse.
People always believe a man capable of betraying his family is capable of stealing from his business.
I copied everything I could before they found out.
If I'm gone...
Trust no one inside Carter Holdings.
Especially not—
The page ended abruptly.
Torn.
The name was missing.
Daniel slammed his fist against the concrete wall.
"No..."
Lauren searched the box again.
There had to be another page.
Instead...
She found a photograph.
Company Christmas Party.
Five years earlier.
Dozens of smiling employees.
Daniel stood near the center.
Lauren's eyes moved across the crowd.
Then stopped.
"The man."
Daniel looked.
Standing directly behind him...
Was the stranger from the photographs.
Smiling.
As if he had belonged there all along.
Daniel whispered,
"His name..."
He closed his eyes.
Trying to remember.
Trying to force the memory back.
Then it came.
"...Richard."
Lauren looked at him.
"Richard who?"
Daniel's expression changed completely.
"No..."
"It can't be."
"What?"
"He wasn't an employee."
"He was my father's best friend."
Silence filled the storage unit.
Lauren felt ice spread through her veins.
"Your father's..."
Daniel nodded.
"He practically helped raise me."
Lauren suddenly understood why the face had seemed so familiar.
She had seen him once.
Years ago.
At Daniel's father's funeral.
The man had stood beside the family...
Offering condolences.
Smiling.
Watching.
Waiting.
Daniel looked down at the unfinished letter.
"If Richard is behind this..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
No one spoke.
Only a distorted electronic voice.
"You should have left the locker closed."
The call ended.
A second later...
Lauren's phone vibrated.
A photo message.
She opened it.
Her blood froze.
Someone had taken a picture of their apartment.
Only minutes earlier.
The nursery window was visible.
And inside...
Their twins were sleeping.
At the bottom of the image, one sentence appeared.
