Chapter 8 - Graduation and Grand Opening

Three months later, the university auditorium was filled with cheering families.
"Madison Miller - Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Magna Cum Laude!"
The crowd erupted into applause as I walked across the stage in my cap and gown to receive my diploma. In the front row, Grandpa Arthur stood up, clapping vigorously with tears in his eyes. Beside him stood Liam, holding three-year-old Noah on his shoulders. Noah was wildly waving a tiny bouquet of yellow flowers, shouting, "That's my mommy! Go Mommy!"
After the ceremony, we celebrated at Grandpa's estate. The garden was decorated with fairy lights, flowers, and tables laden with delicious food. Friends from my nursing cohort, Frank Vance, and several colleagues from the hospital were there.
During the party, Grandpa Arthur tapped his glass with a spoon, signaling for quiet.
"Everyone," Grandpa said, his voice brimming with pride. "Three years ago, my granddaughter walked into my life carrying nothing but her son and a broken bicycle. Tonight, she stands before us as a registered pediatric nurse, a devotion to her child, and the pride of my life."
The guests cheered, raising their glasses.
"And to celebrate this milestone," Grandpa continued, looking at me with a twinkle in his eye, "I have one more announcement. Madison and I have partnered to establish the Noah Arthur Foundation—a charitable fund dedicated to providing financial, legal, and housing assistance to young single mothers in our state so that no mother ever has to freeze on the street again."
I was completely overcome with emotion, rushing into Grandpa’s arms and hugging him tight. "Grandpa... thank you. Thank you for everything."
"You did the work, Madison," he whispered softly into my hair. "I just provided the foundation."
Later that evening, as the sun set in shades of pink and gold, Liam walked over to where I was sitting on the porch steps, watching Noah play on the lawn. He sat down beside me, handing me a cup of sparkling cider.
"So, Nurse Miller," Liam smiled warmly. "How does it feel to have everything you fought for?"
"It feels surreal," I said softly, leaning my head against his shoulder. "For so long, I thought my life was over before it even started. Now I feel like it's just beginning."

Liam reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
My breath caught in my throat.
