Chapter 4 - The Reckoning at the Table

The living room fell into a suffocating, heavy silence.
Dad took a step back, looking between Mom and the police officer. "Arthur... what are you talking about? Stolen money? Eleanor, what is he saying?"
Mom was trembling now, her hands clutching her pearl necklace. "Dad, this is a family matter! Madison wasn't capable of handling that money! She’s an unwed teenage mother with no job! I was holding it for her safety!"
"Holding it?" Frank Vance stepped forward, opening a leather briefcase and pulling out copies of bank transfers. "Mrs. Miller, you transferred $40,000 directly to Lauren’s university tuition account last month. You spent $12,000 at luxury boutiques in the city. Meanwhile, Madison was left with less than fifty dollars a week to feed her newborn baby."
"Is this true, Eleanor?" Dad asked, his voice trembling as he looked at Mom. "You told me the trust money was being invested in a high-yield savings account for Noah!"
"She lied to you, Richard, just like she lied to everyone else," Grandpa said, his eyes fixated on Mom. "And you were too blind and cowardice to look closer because it kept your life peaceful."
Lauren stepped forward, trying to maintain her composure. "Grandpa, I'm the one going to law school! I'm the one who is actually going to make this family proud! Madison made a mistake having a baby at nineteen. Why should all that money sit in an account when I can use it to build a career?"
The cold arrogance in Lauren's voice made my blood boil. For months, I had felt small, guilty, and ashamed. But looking at her now—standing in front of a police officer, still trying to justify stealing from her nephew—the last piece of fear inside me died.
I stepped out from behind Grandpa and looked Lauren straight in the eyes.
"You think having a baby made me weak, Lauren?" I said, my voice steady and strong. "Noah didn't ruin my life. You and Mom tried to. You took my car, my money, and my dignity, and you left me to freeze on the side of the road. But you will never, ever take another thing from me."
Officer Miller stepped forward, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "Eleanor Miller, you are under investigation for grand larceny and forgery. You have the right to remain silent..."
"Wait! No! Dad, stop them!" Mom shrieked as the officer stepped toward her. "Richard! Do something!"
Dad sank into a chair, burying his face in his hands, unable to say a word.
"Hand over the keys to the Cadillac, Lauren," Grandpa Arthur ordered quietly. "Now."
Lauren burst into tears of rage and humiliation, tearing the keys out of her designer handbag and slamming them down on the coffee table.

"Take the damn car!" she screamed. "You're ruining this family over her!"
"No," Grandpa said softly, taking the keys. "I'm saving what's left of it."
