Part 8: The New Beginning

The transition away from the Vance estate was swift, decisive, and permanent. Within forty-eight hours of the incident, our legal team had secured a complete restraining order against my mother, severing all contact while the criminal investigation into unlawful confinement and coercion proceeded. My mother’s attempts to use her social standing and family wealth to bury the scandal fell flat; the evidence recovered from the security room servers and Elena’s full confession left no room for legal maneuvering.
Claire and I checked into a quiet, sunlit recovery suite at a private medical center overlooking the bay, where she received top-tier prenatal care and the peaceful rest she so desperately needed.
By the following week, we had moved out of the city entirely, renting a bright, modern coastal home three hours away from the gloomy stone walls and iron gates of my childhood. There were no grand courtyards, no towering dark trees, and no oppressive family legacy hanging over the doorways. Just wide windows, the sound of crashing waves, and a warm, open layout where the morning sun flooded every room.
I immersed myself completely in preparing for the baby's arrival. I turned down several international travel contracts, opting instead to work remotely from my new home office so I could be by Claire's side every single day. We spent our afternoons painting the nursery a soft shade of pale blue and assembling the crib together, laughing at confusing instruction manuals and sharing quiet moments of domestic peace that we had never been able to experience before.
The psychological weight of what happened slowly began to lift from Claire's shoulders. The nightmares that plagued her first few nights in the new house gradually faded, replaced by the gentle kicks of our growing child and the steady, reassuring presence of my hand resting on her belly.

As the weeks passed, the physical reminders of her ordeal vanished. She regained her strength, her appetite returned, and the laughter that had been stifled during our time at the estate finally returned to her voice.
Then, on a crisp, clear Tuesday morning just as spring transitioned into summer, the baby decided it was time to make an entrance.
