Chapter 8 - Justice Delivered

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a remarkably brief time for a multi-count felony trial.

When the court reconvened at 4:00 PM on Friday, the energy in the room was tense. I sat in the front row, holding my hands over my stomach, feeling the comforting warmth of my baby's movements.

"Will the defendants please stand?" Judge Patricia Miller ordered.

Grant and Ryan stood up beside their attorneys. Grant tried to maintain a rigid posture, but his hands were visibly trembling. Ryan looked as though he might faint.

"On the first count of Grand Larceny," the foreperson read aloud, "we find the defendant, Grant Bennett, GUILTY."

"On the second count of Criminal Conspiracy... GUILTY."

"On the third count of Felony Domestic Assault... GUILTY."

"On the fourth count of Reckless Endangerment... GUILTY."

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. The foreperson then turned to the charges against Ryan Bennett.

"On the count of Forgery and Financial Fraud... GUILTY."

"On the count of Abetting Felony Domestic Assault... GUILTY."

Grant sagged into his chair, covering his face with his liver-spotted hands. Diane burst into loud, hysterical blubbering from the gallery behind them, while Brooke buried her face in her mother's shoulder. Ryan simply stared at the floor, completely broken.

Judge Miller slammed her gavel down to quiet the room. Her face was severe as she addressed the convicted men.

"In my twenty-two years on the bench," Judge Miller declared, looking down at Grant and Ryan, "I have rarely witnessed such a grotesque display of arrogance, entitlement, and cruelty. You treated a talented, generous woman as a piggy bank to be exploited, and when she dared to maintain her dignity, you subjected her to physical violence while she carried a child."

The judge turned to Grant. "Mr. Grant Bennett, your bail is revoked immediately. You will remain in custody until formal sentencing."

"Your Honor, please!" Grant shouted as court officers stepped forward with handcuffs. "I'm a senior citizen! I have health conditions!"

"You should have considered your health before committing felony violence," Judge Miller replied coldly.

The bailiffs clicked the handcuffs around Grant’s wrists and led him away through the side door. He looked back at me one last time, his eyes wide with shock, but I met his gaze without a single trace of fear.

Ryan was placed in handcuffs as well, pending his sentencing hearing. As he was being led past the prosecution table, he stopped, looking at me with red, tear-filled eyes.

"Claire..." he sobbed softly. "I'm so sorry. I lost everything."

"You didn't lose it, Ryan," I said quietly, looking him straight in the eyes. "You threw it away."

Two weeks later, the sentencing hearing took place. Grant Bennett was sentenced to seven years in state prison without the possibility of early parole for three years, combined with full financial restitution orders. Ryan Bennett was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for his role in the financial forgery and abetting the assault, followed by five years of strict probation and mandatory anger management and domestic abuse counseling.

In separate civil proceedings handled by Arthur, the court ordered the liquidation of Grant’s remaining business holdings to satisfy the $108,000 in unpaid back rent for the Cherry Creek home and to repay the corporate fraud charges.

Diane and Brooke were left with nothing. Unable to afford luxury living or even basic rent in Denver, they were forced to pack their remaining personal belongings into a beat-up used sedan and move into a small rural trailer owned by a distant relative in eastern Colorado.

The parasites had finally been completely cleared from my life.
