Chapter 5 - The Financial Collapse of Grant Bennett

The legal dominoes fell with terrifying speed over the next two weeks.
Grant Bennett’s business empire had always been a house of cards held together by posturing, borrowed capital, and my unspoken financial backing. For years, Grant had used my reputation as an executive at a multi-billion-dollar tech company to secure private loans from wealthy investors across Colorado. He had promised them high returns on commercial developments, claiming that his "family's technology assets" guaranteed the debt.
Once the news broke that I had filed for divorce and lodged felony fraud charges against Ryan and Grant, those investors panicked.
Arthur Vance organized a creditor meeting with representatives from three major regional banks and five private equity partners who had funded Grant’s projects. Held in a glass-walled conference room in downtown Denver, the meeting was meant to review the financial reality of Apex Heritage Holdings.
Grant arrived flanked by his defense attorney, a weary-looking man named Harold Vance (no relation to Arthur or the detective). Grant looked withered; the arrogant, booming patriarch who had ordered me out of "his house" on New Year's Eve had aged ten years in fourteen days. His hair was unkempt, his designer suit hung loosely on his shoulders, and his eyes darted nervously around the room.
Ryan sat beside him, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table, completely crushed under the weight of incoming indictments.
Arthur opened his leather binder and projected a financial breakdown onto the large screen at the head of the table.
"Gentlemen," Arthur began, addressing the room. "We are here to clarify the asset structure regarding Mrs. Claire Bennett and the entity known as Apex Heritage Holdings. Over the past three years, Mr. Grant Bennett has claimed co-ownership of several real estate assets, including the penthouse at 1400 Lawrence Street and the residential property at Cherry Creek."
Arthur tapped a key, displaying clear title deeds on the screen.
"As verified by the county clerk and independent forensic accountants, these properties are 100% owned by Claire Bennett under pre-marital corporate structures. Neither Ryan Bennett nor Grant Bennett holds any legal equity or title interest. Furthermore, the $750,000 transferred into Apex Heritage Holdings was accomplished through verified digital forgery and has now been recovered under a court-ordered clawback."
A murmur of outrage swept through the gathered investors.
"What about the commercial plot in Colorado Springs?" one investor demanded, leaning forward. "Grant assured us that his daughter-in-law was guaranteeing the $2 million construction bond!"
Arthur looked directly at Grant's attorney. "Mrs. Bennett never signed, acknowledged, or guaranteed any construction bond. Any document suggesting otherwise is a fraudulent instrument currently under federal investigation."
Grant slammed his fist on the table. "She’s my daughter-in-law! Her wealth is marital property! Ryan has a right to half of everything she owns!"
Arthur smiled thinly, holding up a thick document. "This is the pre-nuptial agreement signed by Ryan Bennett three days prior to his marriage to Claire. It contains a complete waiver of spousal support, an explicit separation of pre-marital and future individual earnings, and a severe infidelity and misconduct penalty clause. Under Colorado law, committing felony domestic assault against a spouse automatically triggers the enforceability of these separation clauses."
Grant turned his furious gaze onto his son. "You signed a pre-nup?!"
Ryan flinched, pulling his hands back. "Dad... you told me to sign whatever her lawyers gave us back then so the wedding would go through! You said we could break it later!"
"Silence!" Grant shouted, his face turning a dangerous shade of crimson.
"Mr. Bennett," Arthur said coldly, shutting his binder. "The district attorney has finalized the indictment. You are being charged with third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, grand larceny, and three counts of felony forgery. The bank accounts for your company are seized. The eviction on your residence takes effect tomorrow morning."
Grant slumped back into his chair, his breathing heavy and ragged. The illusion of his power, built entirely on my resources and silence, had collapsed completely.
As the investors filed out of the room, shouting demands for immediate repayment and threatening civil lawsuits, Ryan stumbled toward Arthur.

"Arthur... please," Ryan whispered, tears welling in his eyes. "Can I just talk to Claire? Just five minutes? I need to tell her I'm sorry. I didn't want Dad to hurt her. I was scared of him!"
Arthur looked at Ryan with utter disdain. "You held her hands, Ryan. You held your pregnant wife still while your father burned her. You aren't a victim of your father; you are his accomplice. Save your apologies for the jury."
