Chapter 3 - The Locks Are Changed

By 9:00 AM on New Year's Day, I was discharged from the hospital with orders to rest and avoid stress. Accompanied by Arthur and two off-duty police officers serving as private security, I returned to the penthouse.

The private elevator unlocked on the top floor, and the doors slid open to reveal absolute chaos.

The dining room was still covered in the remnants of the disaster I had caused before leaving. Shards of crystal glassware glittered in the bright morning sunlight, stained with gravy and red wine. But beyond my dramatic exit, the family had left their own mark. Drawers in my home office had been yanked open and overturned. File cabinets were unlocked, and my personal safe in the master closet bore scratch marks around the digital keypad where Grant had clearly tried to force it open before being evicted.

"They were looking for your original title deeds and financial keys," Arthur noted, stepping carefully over a broken dinner plate. "They knew the walls were closing in."

A team of locksmiths was already at work replacing the biometric readers on the elevator doors and the private entryways. A commercial cleaning crew arrived twenty minutes later to restore the apartment.

While the cleaners worked, I sat at my pristine kitchen island, holding a cup of warm chamomile tea. My lap was covered by a soft cashmere throw—a replacement for the burned sweater currently sealed in a police evidence bag.

My phone rang. It was an unlisted number. I answered and put it on speaker, with Arthur standing beside me, recording the call.

"Claire!" Ryan’s frantic voice erupted through the speaker. "Thank God you picked up. Where are you? The guards downstairs wouldn't let me up. They said my keycard was deactivated!"

"It is deactivated, Ryan," I said calmly. "You no longer have access to this building, my accounts, or my life."

"Claire, stop this nonsense!" Ryan shouted, his voice cracking with panicked anger. "Dad made a mistake, okay? He had too much scotch. He didn't realize he burned you!"

"He pressed a lit cigarette into my flesh while you held my arms," I replied, my tone icy and steady. "You held me down, Ryan. You watched your father assault your pregnant wife."

"I was trying to keep the peace!" Ryan argued, his desperation rising. "You were disrespecting him! You know how traditional he is about family hierarchy. Look, we can talk about this like adults. Just tell the police it was a household accident. If Dad gets arrested, his business reputation will be destroyed!"

"His business reputation is already destroyed," I said. "And so is yours. I know about the $750,000 you stole from our child's trust fund."

Silence fell over the line. For five full seconds, Ryan didn't breathe.

"Claire... I can explain that," Ryan stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. "Dad needed short-term liquidity for a real estate acquisition in Colorado Springs. He was going to pay it back with fifteen percent interest next month! It was an investment for our baby!"

"It was grand larceny and forgery," Arthur spoke up, stepping closer to the phone. "This is Arthur Vance, Mr. Bennett. As of 8:00 AM today, an emergency injunction has frozen all accounts associated with Apex Heritage Holdings LLC. Furthermore, a formal complaint for corporate fraud, criminal conspiracy, and felony domestic assault has been lodged with the Denver District Attorney’s office."

"Arthur? Wait! Don't do this!" Ryan begged. "Claire, please! Think about our baby! A child needs a father!"

"My baby needs to be safe from a coward," I said. "You'll be receiving formal divorce papers by the end of the day. Do not contact me again."

I ended the call and handed the phone back to Arthur.

Within two hours, the news began to spread through our social and professional circles. Grant Bennett was a prominent figure in local real estate, often touting his family's high-society standing and ethical business practices. By noon, Arthur had leaked a sanitized summary of the police report to local business journalists—focusing on the financial fraud and the emergency protection order filed against Grant and Ryan Bennett.

The fallout was immediate. By late afternoon, Grant’s commercial partners began issuing statements distancing themselves from Apex Heritage Holdings. Bank accounts were locked, construction loans were suspended, and lines of credit were instantly canceled pending the criminal investigation.

Sitting in my clean, silent living room, looking out over the snow-capped Rocky Mountains, I felt the baby kick again. This time, it wasn't a warning. It was a sign of life, demanding that I keep moving forward.
