Chapter 8 - The New Beginning

The moment the front door closed behind my parents, the house felt entirely different. The oppressive heavy atmosphere was gone, replaced by empty rooms waiting for new life.
The very next day, locksmiths changed every lock on the property. Contractors came in to renovate. We tore down the dark wallpaper in the dining room, replaced the old flooring, and repainted the walls in warm, light colors.
Michael and Sarah came over on the second weekend of February—not as dependents, but as siblings seeking genuine reconciliation. They brought moving boxes, paintbrushes, and pizza.
“I’m so sorry, Daniel,” Michael said as we painted the living room walls eggshell white. “We were blind. We let Dad control the narrative because it was easier than looking at the truth.”

I looked around at my brother, my sister, and my daughter laughing together. The toxic shadow that had hung over our family for a decade had finally been lifted. The house was no longer a place of obligation and deceit—it was becoming a home.
