Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Parasites

Over the next two weeks, as the eviction clock ticked down, the true extent of my family’s hypocrisy came to light.

With Mr. Vance’s help, I audited the property’s financial accounts. What I found was appalling. For three years, while I was working twelve-hour shifts at the warehouse, my father had been collecting ‘maintenance contributions’ from my siblings, Michael and Sarah, claiming the money was going toward paying me rent.

In reality, Dad had been pocketing their money to fund his gambling habits and lavish weekend trips, all while telling Michael and Sarah that I was a freeloading parasite who refused to pay my share.

When Michael found out, he called me in tears.

“Daniel... I didn’t know,” Michael choked out over the phone. “Dad told us you hadn’t paid a dime in three years. He said you were living off his pension!”

“I paid off the entire $45,000 mortgage default in 2023, Michael,” I said quietly. “I paid the annual property taxes out of my own checking account every November. Check the public county portal—it’s all there.”

There was a long silence on the line as my brother checked the online portal himself. The sound of his quiet sobbing came through the speaker.

“He lied to us,” Michael whispered. “He made us hate you so we wouldn’t ask where our money was going.”

Sarah, too, realized she had been manipulated. Within forty-eight hours, both of my siblings packed their bags and moved out of the house, refusing to pay Dad another cent or speak to our parents until they made things right.

The house on Oak Street was now empty of its golden children. Only my parents remained, sitting in a dark, quiet living room, surrounded by the lies they could no longer sustain.
