Chapter 6 - Rebuilding from the FrostJanuary 2nd arrived, bringing a crisp, clear morning. I started my new position as Operations Supervisor at Vanguard Logistics.

The work was demanding, but my years of warehouse experience paid off immediately. Within my first week, I restructured the inventory dispatch system, saving the branch over twenty hours of delayed labor. The regional manager took notice instantly.

Meanwhile, Emma started at her new elementary school near the B&B. Free from the constant tension of my parents’ house—where she was forced to walk on eggshells—her bright, energetic personality blossomed again. She joined the school art club and made three new best friends.

“Daddy,” Emma asked one evening, dipping her paintbrush into blue watercolor, “are we going back to the old house?”

I sat beside her and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Only to make it ours, sweetie. No more walking softly. No more broken ornaments.”

She smiled, painting a bright yellow sun in the corner of her paper. “Can I have a purple bedroom?”

“The purplest bedroom in the whole city,” I promised.
