Chapter 8 - The Road to Recovery

Two weeks later, the morning sun broke over the snow-capped peaks surrounding Nathan’s estate, illuminating the valley in brilliant gold. The blizzard was now a distant memory, and the road to the estate had been cleared.
Inside the master bedroom of the mansion, Sarah sat up in a plush armchair beside a roaring fireplace, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. Her skin had recovered its warm color, though her hands still bore light scars from the frostbite. On the floor beside her, Lily was building a tower out of wooden blocks, while Owen and Ethan slept peacefully in twin cribs near the window.
Nathan stepped into the room carrying a tray of hot tea and fresh pastries, placing it on the small table beside his sister.
"You need to eat," Nathan said with a gentle smile, handing her a teacup. "Doctor’s orders."
Sarah took the cup, her fingers touching his. She looked out the window at the peaceful winter landscape, then back at her brother.
"The doctor at the hospital said I would make a full recovery," Sarah said softly. "Lily’s hands are completely healed, too. He called it a miracle."
"It wasn't a miracle," Nathan replied, sitting across from her. "It was Lily's courage and your determination to protect them. She dragged that sled over two miles in a category-four winter storm, Sarah. She takes after her mother."
Sarah’s eyes brimmed with tears. She set her cup down and reached out, taking Nathan’s hands in hers. "Nathan... I spent seven years believing I couldn't come back. Marcus convinced me that everyone had abandoned me, that you hated me for leaving."
"I never hated you, Sarah," Nathan said, his voice thick with emotion. "I was angry at myself for letting you walk away. I built these iron gates to keep the world out, but all I really did was lock myself in a cage of my own regret. I should have come after you."
"We both made mistakes," Sarah whispered, squeezing his hands. "But you saved us. You saved my children."
"We saved each other," Nathan corrected gently.
A soft knock came at the open door, and Rosa stepped in, smiling warmly. "Dr. Pierce, the legal representatives from Judge Vance’s office have arrived with the finalized guardianship papers."
Nathan stood up and looked down at his sister. "Are you ready to start over?"
May you like
Sarah looked at Lily, who was giggling as she stacked another block, and then at her two healthy baby boys. A genuine, radiant smile lit up her face for the first time in nearly a decade.
"I’m ready," she said firmly.
