Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Snow

The screeches of metal against metal echoed through the snowy court as the heavy iron gate was forced apart. Marcus stepped onto the frozen gravel, his dark cashmere coat untouched by the howling gale. Beside him, Deputy Vance hefted a pair of bolt cutters, while Dr. Aris Thorne—a disgraced former anesthesiologist—clutched a heavy leather medical case, his eyes nervously darting toward the stone mansion.

Inside the study, Judge Eleanor Vance’s face remained firm on the monitor. "I am issuing an immediate federal protective order and an emergency arrest warrant for Marcus Kane, Deputy Vance, and Dr. Thorne for attempted human trafficking and conspiracy to murder," she declared, her voice calm and authoritative. "Federal Marshals are en route via high-clearance snowcats, but the blizzard will delay them for forty minutes. Dr. Pierce, you must hold the line."

"Understood," Nathan said, closing the encrypted line. He turned to Rosa, who was watching from the hallway, her face pale.

"Take Lily, Owen, and Ethan to the lower medical bay behind the wine cellar," Nathan instructed in a low, even tone. "The door is reinforced steel with an electronic keypad. Do not open it for anyone but me."

"What about you, Master Nathan?" Rosa asked, her hands trembling as she cradled little Ethan close to her chest, with Lily limping beside her and holding baby Owen.

"I’m going to make sure they never step foot past the foyer."

Nathan activated the estate's heavy security lockdown. Thick steel shutters descended over the lower windows, sealing the mansion into an impenetrable fortress. Outside, Marcus watched the shutters lock into place and let out a cold, sharp laugh that carried through the intercom.

"A wall of steel won't save you, Nathan!" Marcus shouted over the wind. "Vance, breach the side door."

Deputy Vance stepped up to the secondary entrance near the garage, pulling a heavy tactical ram from the back of the SUV. With three powerful strikes, the wooden frame splintered, but the reinforced deadbolt held firm. Frustrated, Vance unholstered his sidearm and fired three rounds into the lock assembly. The door yielded with a heavy bang.

Nathan waited in the main corridor, his mind sharp and focused. As a surgeon, he knew human anatomy; he knew precisely where to strike to neutralize a threat without taking a life. He grabbed a stainless-steel surgical retractor from a nearby emergency supply kit, its heavy metallic edge cold against his palm.

As Deputy Vance stepped through the broken door, his flashlight beam cutting through the darkness, Nathan struck from the shadows. He brought the heavy instrument down on Vance’s right wrist, forcing the deputy to drop his weapon. Before Vance could react, Nathan drove his elbow into the man’s solar plexus, knocking the wind out of him, and dragged the stunned officer into a nearby storage closet, locking the heavy door from the outside.

"Vance?" Marcus’s voice echoed from the doorway. He stepped inside, flanked by Dr. Thorne. Marcus’s eyes narrowed as he saw the empty hallway and the discarded service weapon on the floor. "It seems my dear brother-in-law wants to play games."

Dr. Thorne gripped his medical kit tighter. "Marcus, this wasn't part of the agreement. The deputy is down. If the federal authorities get involved—"

"Shut up, Thorne!" Marcus snapped, pulling a small silver revolver from his coat pocket. "The storm hides everything. Once I have the children and the documents, we burn this place to the ground. Fire erases all evidence."

Nathan, monitoring them through the hidden security cameras from the central panel, felt a surge of rage. Marcus didn't just want the documents back; he intended to murder everyone inside to cover his tracks. Nathan picked up the estate's master control remote, preparing to lead Marcus into a trap.
