Chapter 9 - Justice Served

The police response was swift and merciless.
While Richard Miller attempted to board a private jet at the municipal airport three miles away, a fleet of state trooper vehicles swarmed the tarmac. Trapped inside his limousine with three passports and half a million dollars in cash, Richard was dragged out in handcuffs by federal agents and Detective Vance.
The evidence against him was overwhelming. Gregory’s full confession, combined with encrypted text messages recovered from Gregory’s phone and financial records tracing the offshore bribes, sealed Richard’s fate. He was charged with multiple counts of attempted premeditated murder, corporate corruption, and child endangerment. With no bail allowed, he was remanded to maximum security pending trial, facing life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Back at St. Catherine’s Hospital, the dark cloud that had hung over the pediatric floor finally lifted.
Elena Miller sat in the lobby holding her daughter, Sophie. When she saw Daniel and me walking down the hall, she stood up, tears glistening in her eyes.
"I don't know how to apologize to you," Elena said, her voice shaking with profound emotion. "Your baby almost died because of the evil monster I was married to."
I walked up to her and gently put my arm around her shoulder. "It wasn't your fault, Elena. You were a victim, too. You were trying to protect your daughter."
"Because of what happened—because you fought back—Richard is gone forever," Elena wept, hugging Sophie tightly. "My daughter is safe now. I can finally bring her home without fear."
We hugged each other—two mothers who had walked through hell and emerged victorious on the other side.
The hospital management instituted immediate, sweeping reforms. The formula preparation protocol was overhauled with triple-verification biometric scanners, and Nurse Rachel Cole was fully exonerated of all wrongdoing, returned to her duties with a newfound sense of purpose and relief.
Dr. Morgan walked out of the PICU holding a familiar, brightly colored jacket—Noah's little blue coat.
"Well, Mrs. Bennett," Dr. Morgan said with a warm, triumphant smile. "Noah’s lab results are 100% clear. His lungs are strong, his heart rate is perfect, and he just finished a full bottle of untainted milk without a single issue."

She handed me the discharge papers.
"It's time to take your son home."
