Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Hallway

The discovery of the sliced logbook and the discarded glove proved that an insider was actively aiding an outside operative. The hospital was no longer just a place of healing; it was a hunting ground.
Detective Vance called in a forensics team to sweep the pharmacy for fingerprints and DNA. Meanwhile, I returned to the PICU. Noah's fever had dropped slightly, and the doctors were beginning to reduce his sedation levels to test his neurological reflexes.
Daniel was waiting outside the door, pacing restlessly.
"Laura," he said, his voice raw. "Please let me speak for two minutes."
I stood against the wall, crossing my arms. "Say what you need to say, Daniel."
"I was terrified," he said, tears brimming in his eyes. "When I saw Noah shaking like that, my mind completely broke. I felt helpless, and I looked for the nearest person to project my terror onto. It was cowardly. I know I’ve been absent with work, and I know I failed you both today. But I love our son more than my own life. Please... don't push me out."
I looked at him—the exhaustion beneath his eyes, the genuine pain in his posture. The anger inside me didn't disappear, but it softened into something manageable. "I need you to be a father, Daniel. Not a bystander. Not a prosecutor. A father."
"I will," he swore softly. "I swear I will."
Our conversation was interrupted by the sudden sound of arguing coming from down the hall. We moved toward the noise and saw Elena Miller confronting a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit. It was Richard Miller, her ex-husband.
"You shouldn't be here, Richard!" Elena cried out, her voice echoing off the white tile walls. "The police are asking questions!"
"I have every right to be here; my daughter is in this hospital!" Richard replied smoothly, though his eyes were cold and calculating. "I heard there was a mix-up with the feeding. You always were careless with her medication, Elena. If something had happened to Sophie—"
"I didn't lose her medicine!" Elena hissed, stepping closer to him. "I know what you did, Richard! You think I'm stupid? You've been paying off hospital staff for weeks to document my 'mistakes'!"
"Careful with your accusations, my dear," Richard murmured, catching her wrist with a tight grip. "You sound hysterical. Exactly as the family court judge expected you to."
"Let go of her," Daniel's voice suddenly boomed across the hallway.
Daniel stepped between Richard and Elena, forcing Richard to release his grip. Richard straightened his Italian silk tie, sneering at Daniel. "And who are you supposed to be? The hero of the ward?"
"I'm the father of the child who almost died because of whatever dirty game you're playing," Daniel said calmly, standing his ground.
Richard’s eyes narrowed slightly, a flash of genuine discomfort crossing his face before he masked it with a chilling smile. "Accidents happen in hospitals every day, gentlemen. I suggest you focus on your own dying child."

Before Daniel could react, Detective Vance stepped out from the pharmacy corridor, flanked by two armed officers. "Mr. Richard Miller? Don't leave town. We have a few questions about your recent financial transfers to hospital employees."
Richard didn't flinch. He simply pulled a leather wallet from his jacket, handed a business card to Vance, and said, "Talk to my lawyer," before walking calmly toward the glass double doors.
