Chapter 9 - Christmas Eve Sanctuary

Aunt Sarah’s house smelled of roasted turkey, rosemary, and warm cider. When Lily and I walked through the front door, we were greeted not by screaming matches or passive-aggressive tension, but by soft laughter, jazz music, and the warm glow of a roaring fireplace.

Ashley was sitting on the living room sofa, rocking baby Maya, while Kyle stood nearby talking to Sarah about woodworking projects.

When Ashley looked up and saw us, her breath caught. She stood up slowly, her eyes wide with nervous hope.

"Hi," Ashley whispered, stepping toward us.

Lily hesitated for a fraction of a second, then stepped forward, pulling a small, clumsy paper ornament out of her jacket pocket. "I made this at school," Lily said quietly, handing it to her aunt. "It's a reindeer."

Ashley’s lower lip quivered as she took the paper ornament, cradling it like it was made of spun glass. "Oh, Lily... it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Thank you so much."

Kyle walked over, offering an awkward, sincere smile. "Hey, Caleb. Glad you guys made it."

"Thanks, Kyle," I said, shaking his hand firmly. The grip was steady, carrying none of the old resentment.

We spent the evening sitting around the dining table, sharing stories, laughing over burnt dinner rolls, and celebrating a holiday defined not by obligation, but by genuine affection and hard-earned growth. There was no mention of Margaret, no toxic guilt trips, and no manipulation. For the first time in our family's history, love was being given freely, without strings attached.
