Chapter 8 - The Season of Renewal

Winter arrived with crisp morning frosts and glittering holiday lights lining the suburban streets. For the first time in my life, December didn't bring a wave of frantic anxiety about hosting family dinners, buying expensive gifts to appease my mother, or playing peacekeeper in endless domestic squabbles.

Our small apartment smelled like cinnamon, pine needles, and freshly baked gingerbread cookies. Lily and I had spent Saturday decorating our Christmas tree while old jazz records played softly in the background.

"Do you think Santa will find us here?" Lily asked, holding up a sparkling blue ornament shaped like a star.

"Are you kidding?" I laughed, lifting her up so she could hang it on the very top branch. "We gave him our exact coordinates, plus a guarantee of superior chocolate chip cookies."

She giggled, wrapping her arms around my neck. "This is the best Christmas ever, Dad."

"It really is, bug."

A few days before Christmas, my phone buzzed with a text message from an unexpected sender: Aunt Sarah.

Hey Caleb! I'm hosting a quiet, drama-free holiday dinner at my place on Christmas Eve. Just me, a few close friends, and... well, Ashley asked if she and Kyle could come. They're trying to build a healthier life. I wanted to check with you first. If you're not comfortable, I'll tell them no.

May you like

I stared at the screen, weighing the quiet sanctuary we had built against the possibility of extending an olive branch. Ashley had been consistent in her therapy, and in our occasional, brief text exchanges over the past two months, she had shown genuine remorse without asking for immediate perfection.

I typed back: We'll be there, Sarah. See you on Christmas Eve.
