Chapter 8 - Breaking the Walls

Special Agent Miller and her partner followed me through the house, their expressions grim and professional. I led them straight into the master bedroom, where the morning sunlight was streaming through the windows.

Lacey was safely at school, spared the chaos of federal agents swarming our home.

I walked over to the cedar shelving unit at the back of the walk-in closet and pressed the hidden release latch. The wood panel swung open, revealing the cramped, dimly lit corridor where Nolan sat huddled on the cot, shielding his eyes from the sudden influx of bright daylight.

"Nolan Henderson?" Agent Miller asked, stepping forward with her badge displayed. "I'm Special Agent Miller with the SEC. You are no longer under corporate obligation. Step out of the room, please."

Nolan exhaled a long, shuddering breath, the tension of fifty-eight days instantly evaporating from his shoulders. He slowly stood up, raised his hands empty, and stepped out of the hidden vault into the bedroom.

"I want to cooperate," Nolan said hoarsely, looking directly at me with tear-filled eyes. "I'll tell you everything about Vance's embezzlement scheme. I have the physical ledger backups stored on the encrypted drive in the wall."

Agent Miller’s partner quickly stepped into the compartment to retrieve the backup drive, while Miller turned her attention back to me and Nolan.

"Mr. Henderson, you will be placed under protective custody as a primary cooperating witness," Agent Miller explained firmly. "As for Richard Vance, federal marshals are executing a search warrant at Vanguard Holdings headquarters in Chicago right now. His office is being seized as we speak."

Nolan nodded slowly, looking down at the floor before turning to me. "Grace... I am so sorry. For everything. I was a coward."

I didn't smile, but the immense weight pressing down on my chest for nearly two months finally lifted.

"You have a lot of work to do to earn our trust back, Nolan," I said quietly. "Starting with telling the complete truth to our daughter."
