Chapter 4 - The Corporate Web

I sat in my car outside the municipal building, staring at the photocopied blueprints on my steering wheel. The afternoon sun beat down on the windshield, but my hands were freezing.
My husband wasn't just hiding from me. He was hiding in plain sight inside a corporate safehouse built into our own residence.
I needed answers, and I needed them from the top.
Without thinking twice, I started the engine and drove straight toward downtown Chicago, heading for the towering steel-and-glass monolith of Vanguard Holdings. It was a forty-minute drive, during which my mind raced through every possible scenario. Was Nolan in financial trouble? Had he embezzled company funds? Was he running from federal investigators?
If the FBI or federal prosecutors were looking for him, hiding behind a bedroom wall in a house his mother helped secure would explain why his phone was pinging towers in Seattle—because Nolan had left a decoy phone with a colleague to forward his calls while his real device sat on airplane mode inside the secret room.
I parked in the subterranean garage of the Vanguard building, smoothed down my blazer, and walked into the pristine marble lobby. The receptionist looked up with a polished corporate smile.
"Good afternoon, welcome to Vanguard Holdings. How can I direct you?"
"I'm here to see Richard Vance," I said, my voice steady and cold. "Tell him Mrs. Nolan Henderson is here."
The receptionist's smile flickered for a split second—just long enough to confirm that my name meant something here. She tapped rapidly on her keyboard, whispered into her headset, and looked back up with a slightly strained expression.
"Mr. Vance is in a meeting, but he can spare five minutes. Take the private elevator to the forty-second floor."
The ride up was fast and quiet. When the doors slid open, I was greeted by minimalist luxury: dark hardwood floors, brushed steel accents, and panoramic views of the Chicago skyline. A sleek assistant escorted me down a quiet corridor and pushed open a heavy mahogany door.
Richard Vance sat behind a massive glass desk. He was a silver-haired man in his late fifties with sharp, tailored suits and eyes as cold as polished obsidian. He didn't stand up when I entered. Instead, he gestured lazily to the leather chair opposite him.
"Grace. What a pleasant surprise. Nolan has told me so much about you."
I didn't sit down. I planted my hands on the edge of his desk and leaned in.
"Cut the crap, Richard. Where is my husband?"
Vance didn't flinch. He clasped his hands together on the desk, a faint, condescending smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Nolan is in Seattle. Overseeing our new distribution center rollout. We discussed this, Grace. Big logistics project. Very demanding."
"He's not in Seattle," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "He's living behind the wall of our master bedroom in Naperville. He has been for nearly two months."
The silence in the office became absolute. The hum of the centralized ventilation system sounded deafening.
For a brief second, a flash of genuine surprise crossed Vance's eyes, quickly masked by practiced corporate composure. He leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers.
"You have a very active imagination, Grace. It's understandable. Being a single mother while your husband travels for high-stakes corporate expansion can put a heavy strain on the psyche."
"I have him on camera, Richard," I lied smoothly, watching his reaction like a hawk. "I have video of him raiding my refrigerator at two in the morning. I have the architectural blueprints showing how Vanguard modified my house twelve years ago. And I know Evelyn helped him seal the room."
Vance’s expression hardened. The polite mask slipped away, revealing the ruthless executive underneath. He reached slowly into his desk drawer, pulled out a sleek silver pen, and tapped it against the glass surface.
"You shouldn't have gone digging, Grace. Nolan was doing what was necessary to protect his family."
"Protect his family from what?" I demanded.
"From a federal indictment," Vance said flatly. "Nolan made some... aggressive financial optimizations regarding our last fiscal quarter to secure our corporate tax incentives. When federal auditors started poking around, we needed a clean break. If Nolan was arrested, Vanguard's stock would tank, and every asset we own—including your suburban home, your savings accounts, and your daughter's trust fund—would be seized under asset forfeiture laws."
"So you staged his disappearance?"
"We created an off-grid contingency," Vance corrected coldly. "He was supposed to stay hidden in the secure corporate vault room inside your home until our legal team settled the audit quietly out of court. It was supposed to take three weeks. But federal investigators dragged it out."

"And you made my eight-year-old daughter an accomplice to a fugitive?" I shouted, my fury boiling over.
Vance stood up slowly, towering over the desk. "Nolan chose this path to keep you safe. But now that you know... you have a choice to make, Grace. You can either play along until this blows over next week, or you can blow up your own life, your husband's freedom, and your daughter's future."
