Mark’s investors, realizing they had been lied to about the company's financial stability and that the founder was facing felony charges for fraud and domestic battery, pulled their funding en masse. Apex Innovations filed for emergency bankruptcy by Friday afternoon.
Victoria Sterling—who was later revealed not to be a legitimate investor, but a former college girlfriend Mark had secretly kept on retainer as a corporate consultant using marital funds—was arrested on federal conspiracy charges after attempting to flee the state with a laptop containing stolen proprietary source code.
Carol’s social standing evaporated overnight. The moment local news outlets picked up the story of the wealthy suburban tech executive who assaulted his wife while their toddler suffered a dangerous fever, her friends abandoned her. The country club revoked her membership, and her charity boards forced her to resign.
Mark tried to call me three times on Saturday morning. I didn't pick up. When he showed up outside the secure lakehouse in a desperate attempt to beg for forgiveness, David’s private security guards met him at the gate and handed him a final set of papers: the finalized divorce settlement drafted by our attorneys.
