Chapter 5 - The Subpoena at the Breakfast Table

While Victoria was being escorted off hospital grounds, back at our suburban home in Ohio, the real storm was making landfall.

Mark and Carol were sitting at the polished mahogany dining table in the middle of a post-party wreckage. Empty wine glasses, half-eaten canapés, and crumpled napkins littered the room. Carol was nursing a cup of black coffee, her face twisted in perpetual disapproval, while Mark paced the length of the hardwood floor, his phone glued to his ear.

"Victoria's phone is going straight to voicemail," Mark snapped, running a hand through his hair. "And Clara still isn't answering. Where the hell is she? If she's trying to file for divorce, she doesn't have a leg to stand on. I hold all the corporate control."

Just then, the front doorbell rang. Loud, authoritative, and repetitive.

Carol waved a dismissive hand. "It's probably just the catering crew returning to pick up the remaining equipment. Go open the door, Mark, and stop panicking. You're acting like a child."

Mark muttered under his breath and strode to the front door, pulling it open with an annoyed expression.

It wasn't the caterers.

Standing on the porch were two federal process servers accompanied by a county bailiff, flanked by David Vance’s senior associate.

"Markus Sterling?" the lead process server asked, holding out a thick stack of blue-backed legal folders.

Mark frowned, stepping back. "Yes? What is this about? I'm busy."

"You are hereby served with an emergency asset freeze, a forensic audit injunction, a temporary restraining order filed by Clara Sterling, and a criminal subpoena regarding allegations of corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and domestic assault," the server recited professionally, dropping the heavy folders directly into Mark's chest.

Mark staggered backward, nearly dropping the documents. "What?! This is insane! My wife is hysterical! She's mentally unstable! You can't just freeze my company accounts!"

"Mr. Sterling," David’s associate stepped forward, flashing a cold smile. "The federal court has already reviewed the preliminary ledger dumps showing the systematic draining of joint marital assets into offshore accounts under your mother’s name. Furthermore, the local police have taken your wife’s official statement regarding the domestic battery incident that occurred in this very hallway last night."

Carol came clicking out of the dining room on her high heels, her voice sharp. "What is the meaning of this commotion? Who gave you permission to come onto our property? Mark, throw these trash papers out!"

The bailiff stepped forward, his hand resting on his holster. "Ma'am, I suggest you step back. Interfering with the service of a federal court order is a felony."

Carol froze, her mouth slightly open in shock. For the first time since I had known her, the imperious matriarch looked genuinely frightened.

Mark looked down at the documents in his hands. The top page stared back at him in bold print: STERLING V. STERLING & APEX INNOVATIONS: EMERGENCY AUDIT AND RESTRAINING ORDER.

"This... this is a mistake," Mark stammered, his face turning pale. "Clara can't do this. She doesn't know anything about the business! She's just a stay-at-home mom!"

"She knows everything she needs to know, Mr. Sterling," the associate replied quietly. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, the locks on your corporate office have been changed, your bank accounts have been sequestered, and your mother’s private trust has been flagged for money laundering."

The silence in the hallway was absolute. The empire Mark and Carol had spent months building on deception, manipulation, and intimidation had just collapsed in less than twelve hours.
