Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Six months after that fateful night, the Ohio house was officially sold, and the final chapters of our old life were permanently closed.
To celebrate our fresh start, Sarah, David, and a few close friends gathered with us at our lakeside cottage for a small, warm housewarming dinner. There were no elaborate canapés, no fake smiles, and no demanding in-laws barking orders from the living room. Just simple, delicious food, genuine laughter, and the warmth of people who loved each other unconditionally.
As the sun began to set, casting a brilliant orange and pink glow across the surface of the lake, Lily fell asleep peacefully on the living room sofa, wrapped in a soft handmade quilt Sarah had given her.
I stepped out onto the back porch, holding a mug of warm tea, and leaned against the wooden railing. The cool evening breeze brushed against my face, carrying the scent of pine and fresh water.
The cheek that had once burned from a coward's blow bore no physical mark anymore, and neither did my spirit. I had learned the hardest way possible that love is not about enduring abuse to keep up appearances, and family is not about shared last names—it is about protection, safety, and unwavering loyalty.

I looked back through the glass door at my daughter sleeping soundly, safe and healthy, and then out across the peaceful lake stretching endlessly into the twilight.
For the first time in my life, I knew exactly who I was, and I knew that whatever came next, we were going to be more than okay. We were home.
