Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

With the child support secured and the legal battle behind us, I was able to focus entirely on our future. I didn't want to stay in Phoenix anymore; the city held too many ghosts. We needed a fresh start, a place where the air was sweet and the grass was green.

I used the settlement money and my savings to relocate us to a charming, historic town in Oregon. We rented a small, beautiful cottage with a wrap-around porch and a massive garden filled with wild roses and lavender.

I started my own freelance graphic design business from home, which allowed me to be there for Hailey every single day. I walked her to school in the mornings, and we spent our afternoons baking.

In our house, food was never a source of fear or control. Baking became our therapy. Together, we learned to make sourdough bread, sweet cinnamon rolls, and chocolate chip cookies. The kitchen, once a place of terror for Hailey, became her favorite room in the world. It was always filled with the warm, comforting scent of yeast, sugar, and love.

Hailey began attending therapy with a wonderful child psychologist who helped her process the trauma. Slowly, the nightmares faded. The quiet, fearful little girl who used to hide in the corners of rooms transformed into a vibrant, laughter-filled child who loved to paint, run through the sprinklers, and sing at the top of her lungs.

One afternoon, as we were kneaded dough together on the wooden kitchen island, Hailey looked up at me, her face dusted with flour.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"I like our life now," she said, her eyes bright and happy. "It feels like we're finally home."

I smiled, wiping a speck of flour from her nose. "We are home, Hailey. We really are."
