Chapter 10 - The Sweetest Harvest

Three years later, our little cottage had transformed. The garden was thriving, my design business was booming, and our lives were filled with peace.
To celebrate Hailey’s tenth birthday, we decided to host a backyard party. We invited our new neighbors, Hailey's school friends, and two very special guests who had flown in just for the occasion: Detective Evelyn Ramirez (now a close family friend) and Sofia.
The backyard was decorated with fairy lights, colorful banners, and tables overflowing with food—all of it made by Hailey and me. There were platters of fresh fruit, handmade pastries, and, at the center of it all, a massive basket of freshly baked, golden-brown bread rolls.

"I baked the bread, Sofia!" Hailey said proudly, pointing to the basket. "I did it all by myself."
Sofia looked at the bread, and then looked at me. Tear filled her eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure joy. "It is the most beautiful bread I have ever seen."
As the sun began to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the backyard, I stood on the porch and watched the scene unfold. Hailey was running around the lawn with her friends, playing tag, her laughter ringing out like music. Sofia and Ramirez were chatting happily by the garden path, sipping lemonade.
There was no fear here. There were no secrets, no cruel rules, and no cold, conditional love.
I looked down at my own hands, then at Hailey, who had stopped running to grab a warm bread roll from the basket. She caught my eye, gave me a giant, mischievous grin, and took a huge bite.
