Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Past
I met Detective Ramirez and Sofia in a quiet park on the outskirts of Phoenix. Sofia looked older than I remembered, her face lined with worry. When she saw me, she immediately reached out and took my hands, tears welling in her eyes.
"Paige, I am so, so sorry," Sofia sobbed. "I heard about what happened to little Hailey. I should have spoken up sooner. I should have stopped it."
"Sofia, please, tell me," I begged. "What happened when you worked for Miriam?"
Sofia took a deep, trembling breath. "Miriam is a monster behind closed doors. For years, I saw how she treated Derek when he was growing up—she was cold, cruel, demanding perfection. If he made a mistake, she would lock him in the dark pantry for hours. She broke his spirit until he became just like her."
I felt a chill. Derek had always spoken of his mother as a saint, but now I realized his devotion was born of deep-seated terror and brainwashing.
"And what about Hailey?" I asked.
"When Hailey started visiting, Miriam became obsessed with 'fixing' her," Sofia whispered, wiping her eyes. "She said you were turning the girl into a peasant. One day, three months before I left, I saw Miriam slap Hailey across the face because she spilled some juice. I screamed at Miriam. I told her I was going to call the police. Miriam told me if I did, she would call ICE. She knew my husband was still waiting on his residency papers. She threatened to have my family deported. She fired me on the spot and framed me for stealing her silver so the police wouldn't believe anything I said."
"Do you still have the text messages?" Detective Ramirez asked. "The ones where she threatened you?"
Sofia reached into her purse and pulled out an old, cracked smartphone. "I saved everything. I never deleted them. I was too afraid to use them, but now... for Hailey, I will do whatever it takes."
Ramirez took the phone with a grim, determined smile. "Sofia, this is the missing piece. This proves a pattern of abuse, intimidation, and witness tampering. Miriam Vance isn't going to be able to buy her way out of this one."
Armed with Sofia’s evidence, Ramirez and the District Attorney’s office bypassed the local Scottsdale police precinct, where Miriam had friends, and went straight to a state grand jury.

Two days later, my attorney, Sarah Jenkins, called me with incredible news.
"Paige, the grand jury just indicted Miriam Vance on charges of felony child abuse, witness tampering, and extortion. And because Derek attempted to cover it up and threatened you, they’ve issued an arrest warrant for him as an accessory after the fact."
