Chapter 8 - A New Chapter

Three months after the wedding disaster, my life had settled into a rhythm of profound, unbothered peace. The lingering bitterness had dissolved into a quiet confidence.

Kayla had vanished entirely from our social sphere. According to neighborhood gossip, her parents had packed her off to live with an aunt in Chicago, forcing her into professional therapy to address her pathological need for attention and toxic manipulation. Good for her—and infinitely better for everyone else.

With the emotional clutter cleared out of our lives, Nate and I decided to channel our energy into something entirely positive: building our future.

We closed on a charming fixer-upper house in a quiet, leafy neighborhood just outside the city—a place with a wraparound porch, a big backyard for future dogs, and a kitchen large enough to host dinner parties that would actually be full of genuine laughter.

Uncle Reesh was the very first guest we invited over for a celebratory dinner to christen the new place. He walked in carrying a massive bottle of vintage champagne and a toolbox.

"Thought you might need some real man power to fix those squeaky cabinet doors, Nate," Uncle Reesh laughed, clapping my husband on the back like a lifelong buddy.

"Anytime, Reesh. You're officially the master of ceremonies here," Nate smiled, popping the champagne cork with a loud, festive pop that echoed through the empty, sunlit rooms.

We poured the sparkling amber liquid into crystal glasses, raising them high in the center of our new kitchen.

"To new beginnings," Uncle Reesh toasted, looking proudly between Nate and me. "To truth, and to the trash taking itself out permanently."

"To truth," Nate and I echoed together, our glasses clinking with a crisp, clear chime that felt like victory.
