Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of the Inner Circle

I walked out of the bistro into the late afternoon sun, my chest heaving with a mixture of grief and pure, unadulterated rage. Fifteen years of friendship with Sarah, flushed down the toilet because Kayla was a master manipulator who couldn't bear not being the center of attention.
When I got home, Nate was already back from work. He took one look at my red-rimmed eyes, pulled me into his arms, and let me cry into his shirt until my breathing steadied.
"She didn't believe me," I choked out against his chest. "She thinks you're dangerous. She offered me a place to stay 'if things get dangerous'."
Nate's embrace tightened, his hand rhythmically soothing my back. "Let them build their little fantasy world, honey. Truth has a funny way of outrunning lies. We just need to stay solid."
True to Nate's words, the fallout accelerated over the next two weeks. Two more girls from our college group unfollowed me on Instagram. My phone, once a constant stream of notifications, turned into a digital graveyard. It hurt, deeply, but beneath the pain, a strange sense of liberation began to take root. I realized how much emotional energy I had spent over the years managing Kayla’s fragile ego, walking on eggshells around her dramatic outbursts, and forgiving her constant boundary-crossing.
Without her, the air in my life was cleaner.
However, Kayla wasn't done. She didn't just want to isolate me; she wanted total social dominance. She began hosting sympathy gatherings, posting heavily curated photos on social media with captions like: "Surrounded by people who love and protect me. Healing takes time."
Commenters flooded her posts with heart emojis and venomous, coded remarks directed at "abusive husbands" and "toxic marriages."
One evening, while we were eating takeout on the couch, my phone buzzed. It was an email notification.
Sender: Reesh Vance (Uncle Reesh) Subject: Security footage request / That night
I opened it immediately.
Clara, sweetheart, I’ve been watching the fallout of this nonsense online, and it’s making me sick. People talking about your husband like he’s a criminal when he acted like a gentleman. Fortunately, the country club where you had the reception has top-tier security cameras, including audio-enabled hallway and exit feeds. I called the manager—an old buddy of mine—and got a copy of the exact sequence of events from 9:10 PM to 9:20 PM on your wedding night. Do whatever you want with this. People deserve to see the truth. Love, Uncle Reesh.
Attached was a high-definition video file named Reception_Exit_Unedited.mp4.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I looked up at Nate, who was watching me carefully. "It's Uncle Reesh," I breathed. "He got the security footage from the country club. The one with audio."
Nate set his fork down slowly. "Open it."
