Chapter 9 - The Safe Haven

The beam of my flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating a small, cozy underground room that looked entirely different from the grim bunker outside.

It was furnished with a small white bed, bookshelves filled with children's storybooks, and a glowing nightlight plugged into a wall outlet. On the nightstand sat a stuffed rabbit identical to the one in the photograph upstairs.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, wrapped in a warm blanket and looking up in astonishment as the light hit her face, was a young woman.

She looked to be about eighteen years old now, her eyes wide with shock and disbelief as she blinked against the blinding glare of our flashlights.

For a second, the world stopped spinning.

"Chloe?" Sergeant Miller whispered, dropping his flashlight to the floor with a clatter. Tears welled up in the veteran officer's eyes. "Oh my god... Chloe Miller?"

The young woman stood up slowly, her legs shaking. She looked at Miller, then at me, and finally spoke in a soft, trembling voice that sounded like it hadn't been used in years.

"Dad?"

It wasn't just a rescue; it was a miracle. Chloe Miller—the little girl who had vanished ten years ago—had been kept alive down here by Vance, hidden away in a secret compartment beneath the house where he lived. Vance had abducted her a decade ago, convinced in his warped mind that she belonged to him, keeping her hidden while he rented out or sold the house above to unsuspecting families, always maintaining his secret access.

When we brought Chloe out of the underground room and up into the fresh air of the living room, the paramedics swarmed in to check her vitals. Though pale and malnourished, she was miraculously healthy and coherent.

She told us how Vance would bring her food through the hidden tunnels at night, always threatening her never to make a sound or try to escape, while using the upper floors to spy on successive families who moved into the house.

And when Emma moved into that second-floor bedroom two weeks ago, Vance had become obsessed with her too, attempting to pull her mattress closer through his wire rig so he could watch her sleep, unaware that his actions would finally expose his entire subterranean empire.
