I dropped the photo album and sprinted down the stairs, Miller right behind me. Bursting through the back door into the garden, I saw Officer Davis struggling with a disheveled, wild-eyed man clad in muddy black clothes.

He looked older, gaunt, and feral, his hair matted and his eyes wide with manic energy. He was clutching a heavy iron crowbar, thrashing wildly against the officer trying to subdue him.

"Get away from me! She's mine! You can't take her away again!" Vance screamed, his voice cracking with unnatural fury.

Without thinking, I lunged forward, tackling Vance around the waist. The three of us crashed onto the dew-soaked lawn in a tangle of limbs and mud. Vance was shockingly strong, fueled by adrenaline and delusion. He swung the crowbar backward, grazing my shoulder and sending a searing wave of pain through my arm.

"Hold him! Don't let him move!" Miller shouted, diving into the pile and pressing Vance's face into the grass while slapping cuffs onto his wrists.

Vance thrashed and sobbed, his voice turning into a pathetic, high-pitched whine. "You don't understand! The walls protect her! The house remembers! She has to be close to the core!"

Officers rushed over, securing Vance and pulling him to his feet. As they dragged him toward the cruiser, he locked his crazed eyes onto mine.

"You think you're safe?" he laughed hysterically, blood trickling from a scratch on his cheek. "You haven't found the real room yet. Check beneath the foundation! Check what's under the floorboards!"

His words hung in the crisp morning air like a dark cloud.

Sergeant Miller turned to me, breathing heavily, dusting the grass off his uniform. "Are you alright, Mr. Hayes?"

"I'm fine," I said, clutching my throbbing shoulder. But my mind was already racing back to what Vance had yelled. Check beneath the foundation.

"Miller," I said, my voice dead serious. "When this house was built in 1974, what was here before it?"
