Chapter 8 - The Deposition of Lies

Two months later, the legal process reached its climax at the county courthouse.
Vanessa sat across the long oak table in Conference Room 304 for her final pre-trial deposition. She was dressed in a conservative navy suit, trying desperately to look like a humbled, repentant mother. But her eyes were hollow, rimmed with dark circles, and her hands twitched nervously whenever the court reporter’s machine clicked.
Her attorney tried to negotiate a plea deal that would result in probation and community service.
"My client has suffered immense financial and reputational damage," her lawyer argued, leaning forward. "She has lost her business, her public platform, and her marriage. She is willing to enter an Alford plea to a misdemeanor assault charge, provided there is no jail time."
I sat beside my legal counsel, my arms crossed, feeling no pity whatsoever.
"No," I said clearly.
Vanessa’s lawyer blinked. "Mrs. Miller, a trial will be stressful for your daughter—"
"My daughter will not be testifying," my lawyer interrupted, laying a thick manila folder on the table. "Because we don't need her to. We have the full, unedited multi-angle security footage provided by Mr. Mark Miller. We have the medical records. And we have the forensic report on the livestream metadata."
My lawyer opened the folder, pushing three documents across the table.
"Furthermore," my lawyer continued, "we are filing a civil suit for intentional infliction of emotional distress, child exploitation, and invasion of privacy on behalf of Lily Miller. We are seeking full restitution, as well as a permanent restraining order."
Vanessa looked at Mark, who was sitting at the far end of the table beside his own divorce attorney.
"Mark..." Vanessa whimpered, her fake, soft influencer voice slipping back into her throat. "Mark, please. You're going to let them do this to me? I'm Chloe's mother!"
Mark looked at her for a long time. The man who used to cower whenever she raised her voice now looked at her with nothing but cold, empty detachment.
"You used our daughter as a prop for seven years, Vanessa," Mark said, his voice flat and unyielding. "You made her cry on camera so you could sell organic juice box subscriptions. You made her help you hurt Lily. You're not a mother. You're a brand manager who got caught."
He signed his name on the final divorce decree and pushed the paper across the table.
"The plea deal is off," the District Attorney announced from the corner of the room. "We are proceeding to trial on felony child abuse charges."
Vanessa’s face broke completely. She slammed her hands on the table, her carefully styled hair falling into her eyes as she screamed at her lawyer, at Mark, at me. The police bailiff moved in immediately, placing hand-cuffs on her wrists as she was led out of the conference room to be processed for official remand.

As the heavy wooden doors swung shut behind her, the noise stopped.
The air in the room was finally clean.
