Chapter 3 - The Unedited 2:14 Livestream

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush the chest. Vanessa took a frantic step toward her ring light setup on the side table, but her hands were trembling so badly she knocked over a vase of white hydrangeas. The glass shattered against the hardwood floor, water soaking into her pristine rug, but she didn't even notice.

"You're lying," she breathed, her hands clutching her phone as she desperately tried to open her app. "I hit pause. I always hit pause!"

"You hit 'Go Live' instead of 'Save Draft,'" I told her, my voice mercilessly steady. "My sister Emma had your notifications turned on. She got the ping while she was driving to my house. She screen-recorded all two minutes and fourteen seconds before your moderator panicked and took it down."

I didn't wait for her to process it. I tapped play on my own screen, turning the volume up to maximum.

The familiar chime of Vanessa’s cheerful background music filled her dead-silent living room. But the video on the screen wasn't a curated, soft-filtered montage of organic smoothie bowls.

On the high-definition recording, Vanessa’s face appeared close to the camera, her eyes cold and sharp. She had set the phone down on the counter, thinking the lens was covered by a tea towel, but the fabric had slipped, leaving a wide, clear angle of the kitchen island.

“Hold still, Lily!” Vanessa’s voice echoed from the phone speaker, sharp enough to cut glass.

In the video, small six-year-old Lily was sitting on a high barstool, her hands tucked tight between her knees, tears streaming silently down her pale cheeks. Beside her stood seven-year-old Chloe, holding a heavy pair of kitchen shears—the long, industrial stainless-steel ones used for cutting poultry.

“Mommy, I don’t want to do this,” Chloe’s small, hesitant voice rang out on the recording. “Lily is crying. She says it hurts.”

“Be quiet, Chloe! Do you want to get the Disney contract or not?” Vanessa snapped on the video, grabbing Lily’s thick, gorgeous braid in one fist. “Her hair is too dark, it ruins the light balance in the frame. If she looks like a mess, your uncle will realize she belongs in public school. Now hold her shoulder while I trim this off.”

The camera captured every horrifying second. Lily flinching. Vanessa grabbing the heavy scissors himself when Chloe refused to cut it. The sickening, crunching sound of heavy steel blades tearing through six inches of thick, beautiful hair. Lily letting out a tiny, stifled whimpering gasp as the sharp point of the blade nicked the sensitive skin above her left ear.

“There,” Vanessa’s recorded voice cheered callously as the heavy braid fell onto the granite counter. “Now put this pink hat on her. Don't take it off until you get inside your mother's house, Lily. If you tell her I did this, I’ll tell your father you broke my expensive crystal vase and you won't be allowed to see Chloe ever again.”

The video ended with Vanessa smoothing her hair, turning toward the camera with a brilliant, fake smile, and reaching out to end the clip—right as she realized the stream had been live the entire time.

Inside the real living room, the silence returned like a thunderclap.

Vanessa was staring at my phone screen, her lower lip trembling. The polished, perfect influencer facade had collapsed into a grotesque mask of horror and panic.

"Delete that," she whispered, her voice dropping an octave into something feral. "Rachel, delete that right now! That will ruin me! That will destroy our family business! Do you have any idea how many contracts I have signed for the fall season?!"

"You didn't care about destroying a six-year-old girl's heart," I said, putting the phone back in my pocket and zip-locking my jacket shut. "You cared about color balance and brand deals."

"I'll pay you!" Vanessa stumbled forward, clutching my sleeve. "I'll give you twenty thousand dollars! Fifty thousand! We can say it was a trending prank! We can say it was an edit! Mark has the money, I can transfer it right now!"

I looked down at her hand on my sleeve. The same fingers that had forced a pair of cold steel blades against my daughter's skull.

"Don't touch me," I said, my voice so cold it made her pull her hand back as if burned. "And keep your blood money. You're going to need every single cent of it for your legal fees."
