Chapter 5 - Unmasking the "Golden Mama"

I stepped out onto the back porch to take the call. The evening air had turned freezing, but I didn't feel the cold.

"Rachel!" Mark’s voice was frantic, breathless, coming through the speaker with heavy static. "What the hell is going on?! Vanessa just called me screaming that you showed up at our house, threatened her, and uploaded a fake, AI-generated video of her to ruin her career! She says you're trying to blackmail us!"

I listened to my brother—the boy who used to protect me from neighborhood bullies, the man who had let a manipulative narcissist hollow out his soul for ten years until he was nothing more than a bank account and an enabler.

"Mark," I said quietly. "Did you look at the video?"

"She said it's a deepfake!" Mark yelled. "She said people are sending death threats to the house! Chloe is crying in her room!"

"Look at the video, Mark," I repeated, my voice as hard as stone. "Look at your own daughter holding the poultry shears while your wife holds my six-year-old down on your kitchen stool. Look at the dried blood on Lily's head. The police are sitting in my living room right now taking photographs."

Silence fell over the line. For five long seconds, the only sound was the rustle of wind through the telephone wires.

"The... police?" Mark’s voice cracked. The denial was dying, replaced by the terrifying dawn of truth.

"Vanessa nicked her skin with kitchen scissors," I told him, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes, burning cold against my cheeks. "She cut off three years of Lily’s hair because she thought Lily was stealing the attention from Chloe’s brand deals. If you take her side on this, Mark, you are dead to me. And you will never see your niece again."

I hung up before he could respond.

By midnight, the digital forest was on fire.

The story had breached local news. Golden Morning Mama, once the darling of organic baby food brands and luxury stroller companies, was undergoing a catastrophic meltdown. Major sponsors were dropping her like radioactive waste. Within six hours, three prominent family brands publicly announced the termination of their multi-million-dollar endorsement deals with Vanessa's agency.

Her subscriber count was dropping by tens of thousands every hour. But the real storm was coming from inside her own house.

At 1:30 AM, a quiet knock came at my front door.

I looked through the peephole. Standing on my porch was Mark. He looked five years older than he had that morning. His hair was disheveled, his expensive tie undone, his eyes red and rimmed with shame. Beside him, clutching a small purple suitcase, was seven-year-old Chloe.

I opened the door.

Mark couldn't look me in the eye. He looked down at the welcome mat, his shoulders shaking.

"I saw the video," he choked out, his voice breaking into a sob. "I... I saw the whole thing. I found the scissors in the trash bin behind the garage with Lily's hair still stuck to the hinge. She lied to me, Rachel. She's been lying to me about everything for years."

He looked up at me, his eyes filled with absolute ruin. "I left her. I packed Chloe's things and I left."
