Chapter 6 - The Tiger’s Trap

We drove straight to Marcus Vance’s office downtown.
The moment we walked through the glass doors of Vance Law Firm, a receptionist greeted us warmly, guiding us immediately into a sleek, private conference room overlooking the glittering city skyline. Marcus was already waiting there, flanked by a digital forensics expert carrying a specialized laptop rig.
“Elena! And who is this brave young lady?” Marcus smiled warmly, kneeling down to offer Lily a reassuring fist bump. Lily smiled shyly, clutching a brand-new coloring book Marcus’s assistant had quickly fetched for her.
Once Lily was settled with headphones and a tablet playing a cartoon in the corner of the room, Marcus turned back to me, all business.
“You look like someone who just kicked open a hornets' nest,” Marcus said, raising an eyebrow. “Tell me you got what we needed.”
Without a word, I reached into my pocket, pulled out the sleek black flash drive, and slid it across the polished mahogany table.
“Everything is on there,” I said steadily. “High-definition video and audio logs of the assault on my daughter. Sister-in-law’s verbal threats. Furthermore... I found Thomas’s hidden corporate accounts, offshore routing numbers, and internal documents proving systemic financial fraud and embezzlement through his firm.”
Marcus stared at the flash drive for a moment, then looked up at me with a mixture of profound shock and immense professional respect. He whistled softly.
“Elena... my God,” Marcus breathed, turning to his forensics specialist. “Jack, plug this in. Let’s verify the data immediately.”
Jack plugged the drive into his secure rig. Within seconds, lines of code and high-definition video thumbnails populated the screen. Jack played the security footage of Beatrice striking Lily across the face, followed by Chloe spitting in my face, with Thomas standing idly by in complicit silence.
The room went dead silent. Marcus’s expression hardened into stone.
“That’s open-and-shut child abuse, criminal assault, and willful neglect,” Marcus stated grimly. “And these financial files? Good lord. Thomas isn't just losing a divorce; he’s looking at disbarment and federal criminal indictments for corporate fraud.”
“I want total victory, Marcus,” I said, my voice unwavering. “I want full, sole legal and physical custody of Lily. I want the house, I want our assets protected, and I want Thomas, Beatrice, and Chloe to face the full weight of the law for what they did to my child.”

Marcus grinned—a sharp, predatory smile that meant absolute war.
“Consider it done,” Marcus declared, standing up and pulling out his phone. “We’re not filing for a standard divorce, Elena. We are filing an emergency ex-parte motion for sole custody, slapping them with protective orders, freezing every single bank account Thomas and his mother control, and forwarding the financial fraud files directly to the federal prosecutor’s office and the state bar association. They’ll be served before dinner tonight.”
