Chapter 4 - The Trojan Horse Strategy

The next morning, the atmosphere in the house was suffocatingly tense. When I walked down the stairs with Lily—who clung tightly to my hand, her eyes downcast—Thomas was sitting at the breakfast island in his tailored suit, sipping espresso while scrolling through his tablet. Beatrice and Chloe were seated across from him, murmuring quietly. They stopped talking the moment my shadow fell across the kitchen floor.

Thomas looked up, his expression a mask of cold condescension.

“I trust you’ve spent the night thinking about your disgraceful behavior yesterday, Elena,” Thomas said, not bothering to look up from his screen. “Mother and Chloe are willing to overlook your outburst, provided you and Lily issue a proper apology before I leave for the office.”

I felt a surge of white-hot fury rise in my chest, but I forced it down, burying it beneath a mask of absolute calm. Years of auditing corporate financial records had taught me one fundamental truth: never show your opponent your hand until you are ready to bankrupt them.

I gently guided Lily to a chair, keeping my voice level and devoid of emotion. “Eat your breakfast, sweetie. Everything is going to be fine.”

Beatrice slammed her teacup down onto the marble counter, glaring at me with undisguised contempt. “Are you deaf, girl? Thomas spoke to you! After your daughter’s violent, ungrateful tantrum yesterday, you should be begging on your knees for our forgiveness.”

I turned slowly to face them. I didn't cower. I didn't look away. Instead, I let a ghost of a smile touch my lips—a look so disturbingly serene that it actually made Beatrice pause, blinking in confusion.

“I think,” I said quietly, stepping toward the counter, “we’ve all let things get a bit out of hand. Let’s focus on breakfast today. Thomas has a busy day at the firm, and I need to take Lily to her routine checkup.”

Thomas narrowed his eyes, searching my face for signs of rebellion. Finding only a compliant, placid facade, his shoulders relaxed slightly, the arrogant confidence returning to his posture. He assumed I had broken. He assumed the weight of his intimidation had crushed my spirit, just like it always did.

“Good,” Thomas said, standing up and straightening his tie. “It’s about time you showed some common sense. I’ll be late tonight—client meetings. Don't wait up.”

With that, he grabbed his briefcase and strode out the front door, his mother and sister offering parting snorts of self-righteous approval.

As soon as the heavy oak front door clicked shut, sealing them outside, my entire demeanor shifted. I looked down at Lily, who was nibbling nervously on a piece of toast.

“Listen to me, Lily,” I whispered, crouching down to her eye level. “Mommy has to do some important work in Daddy’s office. I need you to sit right here, color in your notebook, and not touch anything. Can you be my brave little helper for twenty minutes?”

Lily nodded solemnly, her big eyes full of trust. “I'll be super quiet, Mommy.”

I hurried into Thomas’s private home office. It was a sterile, intimidating room lined with leather-bound legal volumes, dark mahogany furniture, and a high-end desktop computer glowing in sleep mode. Thomas was fiercely protective of his privacy, but arrogance was his blind spot; he never truly believed anyone in his household was smart enough or brave enough to challenge him.

I approached his desk. The computer required a password, but Thomas, in his lazy arrogance, had written it down on a sticky note tucked inside his desk drawer years ago for emergency remote access. I pulled open the drawer—there it was.

Fingers trembling, I typed in the alphanumeric string. The screen flickered, and the desktop loaded.

I didn't waste a second. I plugged a high-capacity encrypted flash drive into the USB port—a drive Marcus had told me to prepare. Navigating to the hidden system files, I accessed the central smart-home server logs. There, neatly categorized by date and timestamp, was the complete audio and video archive of yesterday's incident in the living room.

I selected the files, copying them directly onto the flash drive. The progress bar crawled forward painfully slow: 10%... 45%... 80%... Complete.

Next, I opened his financial folder. What I found made my breath hitch. Hidden accounts, offshore LLCs, corporate embezzlement schemes, and shady hush-money transfers routed through firm accounts. Thomas wasn't just a corporate lawyer playing hardball; he was knee-deep in white-collar crime, using family assets to hide illicit funds.

I copied the financial documents as well. This wasn't just a custody battle anymore. This was an extinction-level event for Thomas and his family.

Suddenly, the front door rattled.

Clack.

Footsteps echoed in the foyer.

“Elena? Did you leave your purse here?”

It was Chloe’s voice. She had come back.
