Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Study

My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird. On the computer screen, a final background file transfer window hovered at ninety-eight percent.
Come on, come on... I prayed silently, my palms sweating against the edge of the mahogany desk.
“Elena?” Chloe’s footsteps clicked closer down the hallway, the sharp sound of her heels growing dangerously loud.
With a soft chime, the transfer window flashed: Transfer Complete.
I ripped the flash drive out of the USB port, shoved it deep into the pocket of my cardigan, and slammed the desk drawer shut just as the study door swung open.
Chloe stood in the doorway, shopping bags dangling from one arm, her sunglasses pushed up onto her head. She stopped dead in her tracks, narrowing her eyes as she looked at me standing near Thomas’s restricted desk.
“What do you think you’re doing in here?” Chloe snapped, stepping into the room with an air of arrogant intrusion. “Thomas explicitly said this study is off-limits to you. Are you snooping through his things, you pathetic little gold-digger?”
I forced my breathing to remain even, standing tall and meeting her gaze without a flicker of fear. The cowering, submissive wife she expected to see was gone.
“I was looking for a roll of tape, Chloe,” I replied smoothly, my voice chillingly calm. “Not that it’s any business of yours.”
Chloe scoffed, stepping closer and crossing her arms. “Don't lie to me. You look guilty as sin. You know what? I’m calling Thomas right now and telling him that his wife is poking around where she doesn't belong. Maybe he'll finally smarten up and throw you out on the street with nothing, exactly where you started.”
She reached into her designer handbag to pull out her phone.
That was my cue. I couldn't let her warn Thomas. I couldn't let them alter or wipe the cloud backups before Marcus had secured the legal warrants.
“You won't be calling anyone,” I said sharply, taking a step toward her.
Chloe laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “Oh really? And who’s going to stop me? You? The meek little maid who lets her daughter throw tantrums and cries when—”
Before she could finish the sentence, I moved. Years of quiet frustration, the memory of the cruel slap against my daughter’s cheek, and the absolute disrespect of having spit thrown in my face coalesced into a surge of pure, unadulterated lightning. I didn't hit her—I wasn't like them—but I lunged forward with such sudden, fierce intensity that Chloe gasped and stumbled backward against the bookshelf.
Books toppled to the floor with a loud crash. Chloe’s eyes widened in sheer panic, her aristocratic composure shattering instantly.
“Don't you ever talk to me, or my daughter, that way again,” I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper that made her freeze. “You think you rule this house? You think you and your family are untouchable? Let me tell you something, Chloe—your golden era is coming to a very abrupt end. And when it falls apart, there won't be enough money in your offshore accounts to put you back together.”

For the first time in her life, Chloe looked genuinely terrified. She opened her mouth to scream, but no words came out; she was paralyzed by the cold, lethal fury burning in my eyes.
Without waiting for her to recover, I turned on my heel, walked out of the study, scooped Lily up from the living room couch where she was quietly coloring, and walked out the front door into the crisp morning air.
