Chapter 8 - A Trial of Whispers

Two months later, the preliminary hearing began at the County Courthouse.
Lorraine sat at the defense table, wearing a dark gray suit, her hair immaculately tied back. Despite the overwhelming evidence against her, she still held her head high, projecting an air of aristocratic innocence. Her high-priced defense attorney argued that the video footage was ambiguous and that Lorraine was acting under high stress.
Then, the prosecution called their key evidence: the silver frame photo, the hidden server video, and the testimony of Detective Vance.
When the prosecutor played the video on the large courtroom monitors, showing Lorraine smashing the vase with a hammer and striking Emma’s small face, a collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Several jurors turned their heads away in disgust.
Lorraine’s composure finally broke. Seeing her calculated plan exposed in high-definition video in front of her high-society peers, she snapped.
"She was ruining everything!" Lorraine screamed, suddenly standing up and pointing a trembling finger at me. "I built this family! I gave them everything! Sarah didn't deserve that girl! She's weak!"
Her attorney frantically tried to pull her down, but the judge slammed his gavel repeatedly.
"Order in the court! Defendant will sit down immediately!" the judge roared.
Lorraine’s outburst sealed her fate. The defense attorney immediately requested a recess to negotiate a plea deal, realizing that a jury trial would result in the maximum possible sentence.

By the end of the day, Lorraine pled guilty to felony child abuse, evidence tampering, and financial fraud. The judge showed no mercy, sentencing her to six years in state prison without the possibility of early parole for the first four years.
As she was led away in handcuffs, she looked back at me one last time, but her eyes were no longer cold and threatening—they were hollow, broken by the consequences of her own malice.
