Chapter 10 - Where the Sun Touches the Garden

One year later.
The summer breeze swept through the backyard, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine. We were celebrating Emma’s sixth birthday.
The yard was filled with laughter, colorful balloons, and the joyous chatter of her kindergarten classmates. Mark was at the grill, flipping burgers and sharing a laugh with my mother, who had become a steady, comforting presence in our daily lives.
I stood by the kitchen window, looking out at the scene.
In my hands, I held an official letter from the family court: full legal custody was permanently finalized, and a restraining order against Lorraine remained perpetually active. The nightmare that had started behind a washing machine with a bruised cheek was finally, completely over.
Emma ran across the grass, her sun hat flying off her head as she chased bubble streams in the air. She looked healthy, vibrant, and entirely free of fear.
She caught sight of me standing at the window, waved her small hand enthusiastically, and yelled, "Mommy! Come play!"

I walked out into the bright afternoon sunlight, leaving the dark past behind us forever. The truth had set us free, shattered the illusions, and cleared the path for a future filled with safety, unconditional love, and everlasting peace.
