Chapter 9 - Justice and Retribution

By the autumn of that year, justice had been fully served.
Madeline Carter pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit medical fraud, forgery, and financial embezzlement. Because of her age and lack of prior criminal record, she avoided heavy prison time but was sentenced to five years of strict house arrest, heavy financial restitution, and complete social isolation. The elite social circles she had spent her life trying to impress completely turned their backs on her. She became a pariah in the very city she once claimed to rule.
The courts formally updated Brandon’s birth certificate, recognizing Evelyn Hayes as his biological mother.
With the legal truth established, the Carter family trust was unlocked. Sixty percent of the massive estate was placed into a secure, protected fund for Luke’s future, ensuring he would never have to worry about his education, his health, or his dreams.
But Brandon and I didn't want to live in the cold, shadowed West Meade mansion. We sold the estate and used a portion of the funds to build a beautiful, sprawling farmhouse on a gorgeous piece of land in Chattanooga, just ten minutes away from Evelyn's cottage.
The rest of the inheritance was donated to fund a brand-new, state-of-the-art pediatric cardiology wing at the hospital, named The Luke Carter Pediatric Heart Center, ensuring that no family would ever have their medical care compromised by the whims of wealthy donors.
One afternoon, Brandon and I sat on the porch of our new home, watching Luke run through the grass with our new golden retriever puppy. The air smelled of pine, autumn leaves, and sweet earth.

"Do you ever regret finding out?" I asked Brandon, leaning my head against his shoulder.
He turned and kissed my forehead, his arm wrapping securely around me. "Never. It was the most painful thing we ever went through, but it burned away all the lies. It gave me you back. It gave me my real mother. And most importantly, it saved our son."
