Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Manor

The Carter family estate in West Meade was an imposing, antebellum-style mansion surrounded by manicured lawns and towering oak trees. On Tuesday afternoon, the iron gates opened for Brandon’s SUV.

Madeline was hosting an afternoon tea for her prominent socialite friends and several family members—the very same relatives who had witnessed her kick Luke’s cake five days earlier. They were gathered on the grand, paved patio, laughing and drinking white wine in the warm Tennessee sun.

When Brandon and I walked onto the patio, the laughter died instantly.

Madeline stood up, her eyes narrowing as she adjusted her pearl necklace. "Brandon. Chloe. I believe I made it quite clear that you are no longer welcome on my property. And where is that child?"

"Our son is safe at home with Chloe’s sister," Brandon said, his voice cold, steady, and vibrating with an authority I had never heard from him before. "And this is no longer your property, Mother. If you can even be called that."

The relatives murmured, exchanging shocked glances.

"What nonsense are you spouting now?" Madeline scoffed, pouring herself a cup of tea. "If you are here to apologize for Chloe's indiscretions—"

"Shut up, Madeline," Brandon snapped.

The entire patio gasped. No one had ever spoken to the matriarch of the Carter family in such a manner.

Brandon walked to the center of the patio, right where the blackberry cobbler had been shattered days before. He pulled out a stack of documents from his leather folder and laid them flat on the main table, right over the silver serving platters.

"These are the certified, independent DNA test results," Brandon announced, speaking loudly so every aunt, uncle, and cousin could hear. "They prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that Luke is my biological son. 100%."

"Fabricated!" Madeline sneered, though a subtle flicker of panic crossed her eyes. "You've been manipulated by that woman!"

"I also have the forensic IT audit of the Vanderbilt laboratory," I stepped forward, glaring directly into her cold eyes. "We know about the fifty-thousand-dollar bribe you paid to Dr. Julian Vance to falsify Luke's blood records. We have the emails. We have the bank transfers. The hospital board has already suspended him, and a criminal investigation has been launched."

Madeline’s face went entirely pale. Her hand trembled, spilling a few drops of hot tea onto her immaculate dress.

"But that’s not the best part," Brandon said, stepping closer to her. He picked up the final sheet of paper—the maternal comparison. "We ran another test. A comparison between my DNA and yours, Madeline. Care to tell the family why the lab says there is a zero percent chance that you are my biological mother?"

The silence that followed was absolute. You could hear the wind rustling through the oak leaves. The relatives stared at Madeline, their mouths agape.

Madeline’s eyes darted around like a trapped animal. The proud, untouchable queen of Nashville society was suddenly shrinking before our eyes.

"You... you have no right," she whispered, her voice cracking. "You ungrateful boy..."

"Who am I, Madeline?" Brandon demanded, his voice echoing across the courtyard. "Whose child am I?"
