Chapter 7 - A Dark Family Secret Unraveled

With the threat of immediate exposure to the police and the media, Madeline’s defense crumbled. She locked herself in her study with Brandon, me, and the family's oldest living relative, Great-Aunt Clara, who had arrived hastily after hearing the commotion.

Clara, a frail woman in her late eighties, looked at Madeline with a mixture of pity and disgust.

"I told you this day would come, Madeline," Clara sighed, shaking her head. "I told you a lie built on sand cannot withstand the tide."

Under the pressure of legal ruin and social exile, the truth finally poured out.

Thirty-four years ago, Madeline had been married to Brandon’s father, Richard Carter. Richard was a wealthy, powerful man, but he was also desperate for an heir to fulfill his father’s strict estate requirements. Madeline, however, was infertile—a secret she kept hidden at all costs, fearing Richard would divorce her and leave her penniless.

"I had to do it," Madeline wept, her cold facade completely shattered, revealing a bitter, desperate woman. "Richard was going to leave me. Then, a young, unwed mother came to the clinic my family funded. She was poor, she was desperate, and she wanted a better life for her baby."

"My biological mother," Brandon whispered, his heart breaking for the woman he had never known.

"We paid her off," Madeline admitted, staring at the floor. "We drew up a private, illegal adoption, faked the birth certificate with a corrupt doctor, and I pretended to go into labor early at a private estate. Richard never knew. Nobody knew except Clara and my personal lawyer."

"And when Richard died, you kept the secret to keep the money," I said, disgust dripping from every word.

"Yes!" Madeline hissed, her old malice flaring up. "And then you came along, Chloe. A nobody. And then you had him. I knew that if Brandon ever had a child, the trust fund rules would eventually require genetic verification to release the sixty percent share of the estate. I couldn't let anyone test Brandon’s DNA. If anyone found out he wasn't my biological son, I would lose everything. I had to make sure Brandon divorced you and disinherited Luke before the trust opened!"

Brandon stood up, looking at the woman who had raised him not with love, but as a shield for her own greed.

"You kicked my son's cake because he represented the truth you were terrified of," Brandon said, his voice thick with emotion. "You tried to destroy my child's heart, his health, and his family. You are a monster, Madeline."

"What are you going to do?" she whimpered.

"We are going to the police," Brandon said coldly. "And then, we are going to find my real mother."
