Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The rain had turned into a thick, swirling fog as three unmarked police cruisers raced north toward Paine Field Airfield in Everett, sirens muted to avoid alerting our targets. I sat in the passenger seat of Detective Miller's car, watching the windshield wipers sweep rhythmically back and forth.
"We just received confirmation from the detention facility," Detective Miller said, glancing at me. "Michael has been cleared of all charges and released. He's on his way back to the hospital right now to be with Emma."
A wave of profound warmth washed over my chest. "Thank you, Detective."
"Thank your husband," Miller replied. "He kept meticulous records. Without that USB drive and his handwritten logbook, Apex's legal team would have tied this up in court for years."
Ten minutes later, our convoy pulled up to the perimeter gate of the private aviation center. Through the thick fog, I could see the silhouette of a sleek Gulfstream corporate jet parked on the tarmac, its engines whining as they spooled up for departure.
Police cruisers surrounded the hangar, flashing red and blue lights cutting through the misty night air. Officers leapt from their vehicles with weapons drawn, taking defensive positions.
"Richard Sterling! Dr. Vance!" Detective Miller announced over her cruiser's loudspeaker. "This is the police! Turn off the aircraft engines and step out with your hands visible!"
For a long, tense moment, nothing happened. The jet's engines continued their high-pitched whine. Then, the stairs of the jet slowly lowered.
Two men stepped out onto the boarding platform: Richard Sterling, the sharply dressed, gray-haired CEO of Apex BioTech, and Dr. Vance, who carried a heavy leather briefcase tightly under his arm.
"Officer!" Sterling shouted down, trying to maintain an aura of executive authority despite the dozens of flashlights trained on him. "This is an unlawful harassment! We are on corporate property embarking on a pre-scheduled international business flight!"
"The flight clearance has been revoked by the Federal Aviation Administration, Mr. Sterling!" an FBI agent bellowed. "We have federal warrants for your arrest for attempted murder, corporate espionage, chemical endangerment, and obstruction of justice!"
Dr. Vance looked around wildly at the surrounded perimeter. Panic was evident in his posture. He suddenly grabbed Sterling's arm, trying to push past him back into the cabin of the plane.
"It's over, Vance!" I stepped out from behind the police cruiser, my voice echoing clearly across the tarmac.
Dr. Vance froze, squinting through the flashing lights until his eyes landed on me. "Sarah?"
"Emma is alive," I called out, my voice steady and strong. "She's at the hospital under the care of Dr. Thorne. She's going to make a full recovery. And the federal authorities have your entire encrypted server log. There's nowhere left for you to hide."
Dr. Vance's face twisted in desperate rage. He realized that every leverage point he had cultivated—the intimidation, the poisoning, the framed evidence—had completely collapsed. He let go of his briefcase, which tumbled down the metal stairs, spilling reams of documents across the wet tarmac.
"Hands up! Both of you!" officers shouted as they rushed up the stairs, forcing Sterling and Vance to their knees and placing them in heavy steel handcuffs.
As Dr. Vance was led past me toward a waiting police vehicle, he stopped for a brief second. The arrogance that had defined him was completely gone, replaced by the hollow emptiness of a caught criminal.

"Your husband..." Vance muttered through clenched teeth, "...he wouldn't take the payout."
"Because my husband is a father," I said looking him straight in the eyes. "Something you will never understand."
