Chapter 6 - Pieces of the Puzzle

Within thirty minutes, the hospital was flooded with police officers, hospital administrators, and federal investigators. Detective Miller arrived back on the scene, her expression grim as she listened to my account of Dr. Vance's attempt to inject Emma.

A new team of independent pediatric toxicologists—headed by Dr. Aris Thorne, a renowned expert from Seattle Children's Hospital—was brought in to take over Emma's care. Under Dr. Thorne's meticulous supervision, fresh blood samples were drawn and secured under strict chain-of-custody protocols.

"Mrs. Johnson," Dr. Thorne told me gently after completing his examination, "your instincts saved your daughter's life tonight. Whatever was in that syringe Dr. Vance had was not an antidote. We have placed Emma on a standard dialysis filtration setup, and her body is slowly clearing the chemical toxins naturally. She is going to recover."

Tears of immense relief flooded my eyes. I sank onto the edge of Emma's bed, kissing her forehead. Her skin was warmer now, a hint of healthy pink returning to her cheeks. She stirred slightly, her eyelids fluttering open.

"Mom?" she whispered weakly.

"I'm right here, baby," I sobbed, cupping her cheeks in my hands. "Mommy's right here. You're safe now."

"Where's Dad?" Emma asked softly. "Did he find my math worksheet?"

My heart ached at her innocent question. "Dad is working on helping us, sweetie. He loves you so much."

While my mother stayed by Emma's side, Detective Miller asked me to come to the hospital conference room to review the contents of the lockbox I had recovered from our home.

I handed over the encrypted USB drive and Michael's journal. "My husband was trying to stop them," I explained to Detective Miller and the team of FBI agents who had now joined the investigation. "Apex BioTech was rushing a dangerous drug to market. When Michael discovered the toxicity data, Dr. Vance and executive management tried to intimidate him. When he wouldn't back down, they began poisoning Emma to break his resolve and make him look like an unstable father if he ever tried to go public!"

Detective Miller examined the journal entries carefully. "This explains the discrepancy at the Apex research facility. Michael didn't steal the chemicals—Dr. Vance used Michael's security clearance credentials, which Vance had cloned, to remove the poison from the facility storage vault and frame your husband!"

"Then you have to release Michael!" I urged. "He's innocent!"

"We are already processing his release orders," Detective Miller assured me. "In fact, federal agents are executing a search warrant at Apex BioTech headquarters right now, and a statewide warrant has been issued for Dr. Vance's arrest."

Just then, an FBI agent walked into the conference room holding a tablet. "Detective, we pulled the security footage from the hospital parking garage from twenty minutes ago. Dr. Vance didn't leave the premises alone. He met with Richard Sterling, the Chief Executive Officer of Apex BioTech. They took an unmarked black sedan heading toward the private airfield in Everett."

"They're trying to flee the country," Detective Miller declared, standing up immediately. "We need to intercept them before they board that private jet."

I stood up too. "I'm coming with you."

"Mrs. Johnson, this is dangerous—"

"My husband is still being held at the station nearby, and my daughter was almost killed by those men," I said fiercely, looking Detective Miller in the eye. "I know the layout of the Apex research division, and I know how Vance operates. You need someone who can identify the chemical logs on that USB drive in real time."

Detective Miller looked at me for a long moment, seeing the unbreakable determination of a mother fighting for her family. Finally, she nodded. "Get your coat."
