Chapter 4 - Echoes of Betrayal

The lockbox was bound with a brass keyhole. I searched Michael's desk drawer frantically, finding a small silver key hidden inside an empty pen case. I inserted the key into the lock and turned it. The mechanism clicked open with a sharp metallic snap.
Inside lay three items: an encrypted USB flash drive, a leather-bound journal filled with Michael's precise handwriting, and a stack of printed internal laboratory memos from Apex BioTech marked with red "RESTRICTED" stamps.
I opened the journal first. The entries dated back six months.
October 12th: "The new clinical trial results for Compound X-7 are catastrophic. The bio-accumulation tests show high metabolic toxicity in liver and central nervous tissue over prolonged exposure. Dr. Vance and Director Vance know this. They are hiding the data from the FDA to secure the secondary funding round."
My breath hitched. Dr. Vance? The doctor currently treating Emma in the pediatric ICU?
I frantically flipped through the pages, my eyes racing across the lines:
November 4th: "I confronted Dr. Vance about the flawed safety protocols at the lab today. He threatened my career. He reminded me that my family's medical insurance depends on my position. I started making duplicate copies of the raw testing logs."
January 15th: "They know I have the files. Vance warned me that 'accidents happen to people who disrupt progress.' I noticed someone following my car on my way home from work today."
February 28th: "Emma is getting sick. Headaches, lethargy. I brought home water purity test kits. The tap water at our house is clear, but Emma's lunchbox thermos tasted metallic when I checked it this morning. Good God... is someone targeting my family?"
I dropped the journal onto the desk, horror seizing every muscle in my body.
Michael wasn't the perpetrator. He was a whistleblower who had been targeted by his own company! And Dr. Vance—the doctor managing Emma's care—was not trying to save her; he was connected to the very organization responsible for her poisoning!
My phone rang violently, making me jump. The screen displayed my mother's name.
I snatched up the phone immediately. "Mom? What's happening?"
"Sarah!" my mother's voice panicked over the line. "Dr. Vance just came into Emma's room with a specialized injection tube. He said he needed to administer a new experimental neutralizing serum immediately. I told him to wait for you, but he was very aggressive! When I tried to call you, he instructed the floor nurse to lock the corridor doors!"
"Mom, don't let him touch her!" I screamed, grabbing my car keys and running down the stairs. "Do not let him inject anything into her IV! I'm coming back right now!"
I burst out of the house into the driving rain, sliding into the driver's seat of my SUV. I slammed my foot onto the gas pedal, the engine roaring as tires screeched against the wet pavement.
As I drove recklessly through the empty night streets, my mind pieced together the monstrous truth. Apex BioTech had discovered Michael was preparing to release evidence of their toxic pharmaceutical compound. To silence him and force his compliance, someone had been secretly spiking Emma's school water bottle with micro-doses of the compound—a cruelty designed to keep Michael distracted and terrified.

And now that Michael was in police custody, Dr. Vance was at the hospital, attempting to eliminate the physical evidence inside Emma's body before independent crime lab technicians could perform comprehensive tissue biopsies!
I gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white. "Hold on, Emma," I sobbed through my tears. "Mommy is coming."
