Chapter 2 - The Shadow and the Sanctuary

The ride to Upper Manhattan was a blur of neon lights and racing panic. Grace clutched Ivy tightly against her chest, the three-year-old sleeping soundly, completely oblivious to the fact that their entire world had just been upended. Dante sat in the front seat, silent and watchful, while the driver navigated the wet asphalt with practiced precision.

When the car finally slowed, they weren't pulled up in front of a rundown safehouse or a dingy motel. They were parked before an imposing, ivy-covered wrought-iron gate that automatically swung open at their approach. Beyond it lay a sprawling limestone estate nestled in a private enclave of the city—a fortress disguised as a historic mansion.

"Welcome home," Dante said, opening the door for them.

"This is madness," Grace muttered, stepping out into the cool midnight air, holding Ivy like a shield. "I want to see him. I want to look him in the eye and tell him to leave us alone."

"You will," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the dimly lit portico.

Grace froze. Out of the shadows stepped Marcus Vitale.

He looked older, harder, yet devastatingly familiar. The sharp lines of his face were shadowed by exhaustion, and silver threads now peppered the temples of his dark hair. But it was his eyes—those piercing, storm-gray eyes—that caught Grace and held her in place. They were filled with an agonizing mix of raw anguish, overwhelming relief, and a desperate, aching tenderness.

Marcus stopped a few feet away, his gaze dropping instantly to the sleeping child in Grace's arms. His massive hands trembled slightly at his sides, curling into fists as if fighting an internal war just to keep from reaching out.

"Grace," he whispered, his voice cracking. "You're safe. I've got you both. You're finally home."
