Chapter 1 - The First Footprint in the Dark

"Miss Hollis," a man said, calm and careful, "my name is Dante Cruz. I work for Marcus Vitale, and I need you to listen very carefully."

The plate slipped from Grace's hand and shattered on the floor.

"He has known about your daughter for three years," Dante said.

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator and Ivy’s soft breathing from the bedroom down the hall. Grace’s chest tightened as if an iron band were slowly crushing her ribs. She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter so hard her knuckles turned white.

"That's... that's impossible," she managed to whisper, her voice trembling. "I left without a trace. I changed my number, my name—"

"Mr. Vitale does not lose things he cares about, Miss Hollis," Dante interrupted, his tone devoid of malice, yet heavy with absolute finality. "He knew you were pregnant before you boarded the bus to Queens. He knew every clinic, every grocery store, every park bench you sat on. He has watched over you both from the shadows every single day of that little girl's life. He hasn't interfered because you wanted peace. But circumstances change."

Grace’s breath hitched. A cold sweat broke out across her forehead. "What does he want? Is he going to take her? If you touch her, I swear to God—"

"Calm down, Grace," Dante said, using her first name with an unsettling familiarity. "Mr. Vitale is not here to take anyone. But a storm is coming. Enemies within the syndicate believe he has a weakness. They have noticed the subtle protections thrown around a struggling single mother in Brooklyn. If they find out whose child that is, she will not be safe for a single hour. You must pack your things. A car is waiting downstairs."

"No! I'm not going anywhere with you!" Grace shouted in a panicked whisper, glancing back at Ivy's bedroom door.

"Look out your window, Grace."

With trembling hands, Grace parted the yellowed kitchen curtain. Parked directly beneath the flickering streetlamp was a sleek, black sedan with tinted windows. Two men in dark suits stood on either side of the vehicle, blending seamlessly into the rainy Manhattan night. They weren't hiding anymore. The invisible cage had closed.

"Ten minutes," Dante said softly before the line went dead.
