Chapter 5 - THE STORM BEFORE THE DAWN

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan, painting the icy waters in brilliant strokes of gold and amber. Inside the glass-walled penthouse office on the top floor of Thompson Global Enterprises, Marcus Thompson stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, a cup of black coffee cooling untouched in his hand.

The legal and security reports were stacking up on his sleek mahogany desk, and the picture they painted was darker than he had imagined.

Viktor stepped into the office, placing a thick manila folder on the edge of the desk. "The federal raid on Riverside Children’s Home went down at 4:00 AM, boss. District Attorney Harrison had the warrants signed before dawn. They uncovered a massive human trafficking and embezzlement ring. The director and three corrupt caseworkers are already in federal custody."

Marcus didn't turn around immediately. "And the network above them?"

"That’s the complication," Viktor said, his voice grim. "Riverside was a feeder facility for a high-net-worth adoption syndicate operating across three states. They weren't just adopting kids out legally; they were laundering children of deceased parents whose estates were tied up in probate, staging paperwork, and selling them to wealthy buyers overseas. Grace’s parents' car crash wasn't an accident, boss."

Marcus froze. His hand tightened around the coffee cup until his knuckles turned white. "Say that again."

"It wasn't an accident," Viktor repeated calmly. "Local forensics just re-examined the semi-truck logs from three weeks ago. The brakes on the truck that hit your parents—er, Grace's parents—were deliberately sabotaged. Someone wanted their estate, and they wanted Grace out of the way because she was the sole beneficiary of her family's trust fund."

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the office. The realization hit Marcus like a physical blow. Grace wasn't just a random homeless runaway he had pitied in an alley; she was a target of ruthless, high-level criminals who had murdered her parents and were still actively looking to tie up loose ends.

"Who ordered it?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet whisper.

"Victor Vance turned over the financial trail," Viktor answered, opening the folder. "A shell corporation named Sterling Holdings. Run by a man named Julian Sterling—your primary corporate rival in the upcoming downtown commercial real estate acquisition."

Marcus’s eyes flashed with pure fury. Julian Sterling. A man Marcus had battled in boardrooms for years, a ruthless corporate raider who wore thousand-dollar suits and hid behind lawyers while destroying lives. And now, Sterling had targeted a helpless seven-year-old child.

"He wants a war?" Marcus said, his voice cold as ice. "I'll give him a war that will tear his entire empire down to ash."

"What about Grace?" Viktor asked. "She’s safe in the estate, but Sterling has eyes everywhere. If he realizes she’s with you, he’ll try everything—legal, financial, physical—to get to her."

Marcus slammed his coffee cup down onto the desk, coffee sloshing over the rim. "He can try. But he’ll have to go through me first."

Just then, the secure intercom on Marcus's desk chimed. A soft, nervous voice came through the speaker: “Mr. Thompson? Sir? There’s a little girl downstairs in the main lobby, and she says she lives here. She... she won't let security touch her.”

Marcus’s expression instantly softened. The ice in his eyes melted away, replaced by deep concern.

"That's Grace," Marcus said, pressing the talk button. "Send her up to the private executive elevator immediately. Escort her yourself, Mrs. Gable."
