Chapter 4 - THE GILDED CAGE AND THE FIRST SMILE

The black armored Suburban glided smoothly through the iron gates of Marcus Thompson’s estate in the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago. Behind the towering brick walls and wrought-iron spikes lay a sprawling modern architectural masterpiece of glass, steel, and warm timber, overlooking the grey expanse of Lake Michigan. To anyone else, it was an impenetrable fortress of wealth; to Grace, stepping out of the car wrapped in a plush, cashmere-lined children's coat Viktor had procured, it looked like a fairytale castle.
Viktor had arranged for a female family-law specialist and a trusted pediatrician, Dr. Helen Vance (Viktor’s sister), to be waiting inside the grand foyer. The lights were warm, casting a golden glow over the minimalist white marble floors and towering indoor Ficus trees.
Grace clutched Mr. Buttons tightly to her chest, her big blue eyes darting from the high vaulted ceilings to the sweeping staircase.
"Welcome home, Grace," Marcus said softly, kneeling beside her to help unbutton her damp coat. "You don't have to be scared here. This is your safe place."
Dr. Helen, a kind-faced woman with wire-rimmed glasses and a soothing voice, knelt down beside them with a medical bag. "Hello, Grace. I'm Helen. I brought some warm raspberry tea and a very special magic bandage just in case you have any scrapes."
Over the next hour, Dr. Helen examined Grace gently, treating a few minor cuts on her knees from her days on the street, noting her mild malnutrition, and confirming that aside from exhaustion and trauma, she was physically resilient. Meanwhile, the legal specialist sat quietly with Marcus in the adjacent study, drawing up emergency temporary custody papers and initiating the process to permanently sever any legal ties between Grace and the corrupt Riverside facility.
By two in the morning, Grace was bathed, dressed in oversized silk pajamas that swallowed her small frame, and tucked into a massive, king-sized guest suite that Marcus had hastily converted into a child's sanctuary. Walls that had once been stark white were already being scheduled for soft pastel blues and hand-painted stars by Marcus's interior design team first thing in the morning.
Marcus sat quietly in a velvet armchair beside the grand canopy bed, watching the steady rise and fall of the little girl's chest. For the first time in nearly two decades, the sprawling mansion didn't feel cold and empty. It felt alive.
Grace stirred sleepily, her eyelids fluttering open. She looked around the cavernous room, momentarily disoriented, before her gaze landed on Marcus sitting faithfully in the chair.
"Are you still here?" she mumbled, rubbing her eyes with the back of her small hand.
"I told you I'd stay," Marcus replied, standing up and adjusting the heavy duvet over her shoulders. "I'm not going anywhere."
Grace smiled—a tiny, hesitant, beautiful curve of her lips that reached her eyes for the very first time.
"Can... can you leave the light on in the hallway?" she whispered.
May you like
"I'll leave every light in this house on if you want me to," Marcus said softly.
She closed her eyes again, her breathing deepening into peaceful slumber. Marcus stood guard for another hour, listening to the gentle sound of her breathing, feeling a fierce, protective love take root in his chest—a love that would soon change the course of his entire life, his empire, and the world around them.
