Chapter 8 - THE COURTROOM SHOWDOWN

Room 402 of the municipal family court was stuffy, smelling of old paper and bureaucratic desperation.

When Dawson burst through the heavy double doors, his navy coat swirling behind him, the entire room turned to look. He didn't look like a panicked friend; he looked like an apex predator stepping onto a battlefield.

At the defense table sat Elena, her hands trembling as she clutched a tissue, while Maisie sat right beside her, terrified and confused, burying her face in her mother’s shoulder.

Across the aisle sat a slick, expensive-looking attorney in a charcoal suit, whispering smugly to a heavy-set, sharply dressed man with cold eyes and an expensive watch—Richard, the man who had abandoned them years ago and now smelled financial leverage or malicious control.

The presiding judge, Judge Henderson—a notoriously stern woman who had zero patience for emotional outbursts—looked up from her gavel.

"Order in the court. Who enters my courtroom so abruptly?" Judge Henderson demanded over her reading glasses.

Dawson stepped forward, buttoning his suit jacket with crisp precision. He walked straight to the defense table, placed his leather briefcase down with a sharp thud, and looked up at the bench.

"Dawson Parker, Your Honor, senior partner at Parker & Sterling LLP. I am counsel of record for the respondent, Elena Miller."

The slick opposing attorney stood up immediately, flashing a confident, condescending smile. "Your Honor, Mr. Parker is a corporate litigator, not a family law specialist. Furthermore, this is an emergency custody injunction, and Mrs. Miller has failed to demonstrate adequate financial stability—"

"Mr. Chairman," Dawson interrupted, his voice cutting through the opposing counsel's argument like a scalpel. He didn't even bother to look at the lawyer; his gaze remained locked on the judge. "My colleague is correct about one thing: I am a corporate litigator. Which means I spend my entire professional life dissecting fraudulent claims, unearthing hidden assets, and destroying bad-faith actors who try to exploit the system for malicious gain."

Judge Henderson narrowed her eyes, leaning forward. "Mr. Parker, choose your words carefully. This is a family matter, not a corporate hostile takeover."

"It is a hostile takeover, Your Honor," Dawson said smoothly, pulling a crisp folder from his briefcase. "Let me present Exhibit A."

Dawson walked over and handed a set of documents to the bailiff, who rushed them up to the judge.

"The petitioner, Mr. Richard Miller, claims in his petition that he is seeking custody out of a sudden, deep-seated paternal devotion, and that my client is financially unfit," Dawson stated, pacing slowly in front of the judge's bench, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "However, a quick twenty-minute financial subpoena run by my office this afternoon reveals a very different story."

Richard’s face suddenly turned the color of chalk. He shot up from his chair. "Objection! This is a surprise ambush! He can't introduce financial records without prior notice!"

"Under emergency family law provisions concerning bad-faith litigation and parental abandonment, yes, I can," Dawson snapped back, turning to glare at Richard with eyes like shards of blue ice. "Sit down."

Richard swallowed hard and slowly sank back into his chair, sweating profusely.

Judge Henderson flipped through the papers, her stern expression deepening into a thunderous scowl. She looked up from the documents, fixing her gaze squarely on Richard.

"Mr. Miller," Judge Henderson said, her voice dropping to a dangerous chill. "According to these tax filings and bank garnishment notices, you currently have three active bench warrants for unpaid child support spanning the last six years, totaling over forty-two thousand dollars. Furthermore, you filed this emergency custody petition precisely three days after a collection agency seized your primary asset for fraud."

The courtroom went dead silent.

Elena lifted her head from Maisie’s shoulder, staring at her ex-husband in sheer disbelief.

Dawson stepped back up to the podium, his voice dropping to a calm, devastating register. "The petitioner is not here for his daughter, Your Honor. He is here because he is bankrupt, desperate, and looking to weaponize a child to escape his creditors. He abandoned this little girl when she was six months old. He hasn't called, he hasn't sent a card, and he hasn't provided a single dime for her upbringing."

Dawson turned his head slightly, looking back at the defense table where Maisie was watching him with wide, shining eyes. Then he looked back at the judge.

"A child is not an asset to be leveraged, Your Honor. And a mother who works two jobs before the sun rises just to put food on the table is not unfit—she is a hero. I move for an immediate dismissal of the petitioner's custody claim, a permanent restraining order against the petitioner, and an immediate enforcement of all back child support with criminal penalties for perjury."

Judge Henderson didn't even hesitate. She slammed her gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

"Motion granted in full," Judge Henderson declared, glaring at Richard. "Mr. Miller, if you ever come within five hundred yards of Mrs. Miller or her daughter again, I will personally ensure you spend the next five years of your life behind bars. Case dismissed. Bailiff, escort Mr. Miller out of my courtroom immediately."
