Chapter 7 - THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

Over the next three weeks, Dawson’s life underwent a quiet, seismic transformation.
He didn't stop being a high-powered attorney. He still won the Henderson case, securing a massive victory for his firm and earning high praise from Arthur Vance. But the rigid, mechanical walls of his existence began to crumble, one brick at a time.
He started stopping by Elm Street three or four times a week.
Sometimes he walked Maisie home from school. Sometimes he brought groceries for Elena—subtly slipping them into the kitchen while insisting he had "bought too much wholesale." Other times, the three of them would sit in the tiny living room playing board games, filling the old apartment with laughter and noise.
For Elena, Dawson became a pillar of strength she never knew she needed. For Maisie, he became the father figure she had dreamed of on the curb. And for Dawson, they became the home he never knew he was missing.
However, happiness, especially happiness built on fragile foundations, always attracts the test of time.
It happened on a cold Friday afternoon in late November.
Dawson was sitting in his office reviewing a complex corporate merger contract when his private cell phone rang. It wasn't Arthur Vance’s office line; it was the direct number he had given Elena.
He picked it up instantly. "Elena? Is everything all right?"
On the other end of the line, Elena’s voice wasn't calm. It was panicked, breathless, and laced with absolute terror.
"Dawson! Please... you need to come. Right now."
Dawson’s chair rolled back with a loud screech against the hardwood floor. He stood up so fast his vision blurred. "Elena, what happened? Where are you?"
"We're at the municipal family court downtown," she cried, her voice breaking. "He's here. Richard... he's back."
Dawson’s blood ran cold. He remembered Elena mentioning him once or twice in passing—her ex-husband, a man who had vanished years ago when Maisie was an infant, leaving them with nothing, only to reappear now that Elena was slowly starting to piece her life back together.
"Who is he?" Dawson demanded, already grabbing his overcoat and car keys from the hook.
"Richard," she sobbed. "He filed a petition for full custody. He brought a high-priced family lawyer. He’s claiming I’m an unfit mother because I work early morning shifts and can't afford a proper home. He... he wants to take Maisie away from me, Dawson. They're holding a emergency injunction hearing in room 402 right now."

Dawson’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, razor-sharp intensity. All the warmth of the past few weeks vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating focus of a titan courtroom litigator.
"Don't sign anything. Don't speak to his lawyer. Do you understand me?" Dawson commanded, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute authority. "I am walking into that courthouse right now. And I am going to destroy him."
